Associate Vice President of Finance and Administration/Controller

Chatham University welcomes application for the position of Associate Vice President of Finance and Administration/Controller.

This position leads all financial and accounting functions of University operations including development and management of the University's annual budget, endowment and leadership of financial functions including the business office and student accounts.

This position reports to the Vice President of Finance and Operations/CFO.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides day-to-day leadership of cross-functional team, consisting of Business Office, Accounting, Payroll, Student Accounts, Copy Center, Bookstore, and Post Office (approximately 15 direct and indirect FTE's).
  • Oversees the preparation and maintenance of all University accounting records.
  • Ensures strong fiscal and business procedures and policies in place across the campus community.
  • Directs the preparation and review of monthly/quarterly financial statements for internal reporting.
  • Prepares management information including analytical reports comparing actuals vs. budget and previous periods in understanding the results, trends, leading indicators, etc.
  • Demonstrates a solid understanding of key performance indicators including enrollment, discount rate, net revenue, funding, debt service, etc.
  • Prepares and maintains University annual institutional operating and payroll budget and the University's five-year financial model.
  • Implements and monitors all University institutional funds including endowment and grants.
  • Directs the preparation and review of weekly, monthly, and yearly cash flow projections.
  • Coordinates University's annual external audit and preparation of annual external financial statements and footnotes.
  • Oversees grant accounting and administration functions for the University, including leading cross-functional teams with members of faculty and University Advancement.
  • In conjunction with the Vice President, prepares and presents reports to the Board of Trustees Committees on finance, campus facilities and planning, audit, and investment.
  • Ensures the integrity of the University's fiscal capacity through the implementation, execution, and ongoing review of internal financial, operational and compliance controls.
  • Manages University's insurance programs/policies.
  • Complies with all external debt requirements and monitor for required financial compliance.
  • Endorses all purchase orders and cash disbursements.
Minimum qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification, Master of Business Administration (MBA) or other advanced degree preferred.
  • 7-10 years of experience in finance and accounting.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Background in developing and maintaining transparent department budgets.
  • Not-for-profit accounting experience (particularly higher education) is highly preferable.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills along with excellent computer skills.
