Reporting to the Dean of Hendricks Chapel, the Director of Events is responsible for expanding the impact of Hendricks Chapel by leading initiatives related to events, programs, services, hospitality, and facilities. As a key strategic leader of Hendricks Chapel, the Director of Events develops priorities and implements policy alongside the Dean, supervises an Events Coordinator and office coordinator, directs a team of over fifty (50) student employees, and impacts thousands of individuals throughout the campus community and beyond by expanding the role of Hendricks Chapel as a crucial component of student life at Syracuse University.

Responsibilities
  • In partnership with the Dean of Hendricks Chapel, develop priorities and implement strategic policies and procedures that ensures distinctive excellence related to events, programs, services, hospitality, and facilities.
  • In partnership with student-leaders, chaplains, faculty, staff, and advisors of Hendricks Chapel, ensure clear and effective communication related to events, programs, services, hospitality, and facilities.
  • Manage the data collection and qualitative and quantitative metric-based assessment of all events, programs, and services sponsored by Hendricks Chapel.
  • Assist the Dean of Hendricks Chapel in the interpretation and reporting of assessment throughout the Syracuse University campus community.
  • In response to the emerging challenges and opportunity of the Syracuse University campus community, develop innovative strategic initiatives related to events, programs, services, hospitality, and facilities.
Facilities
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with Campus Planning Design and Construction ( CPDC ), to ensure the physical structure of Hendricks Chapel can best create and sustain an environment best suited to fulfill the mission and vision of Hendricks Chapel.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact related to the expanding portfolio of synchronous and asynchronous digital and virtual events of Hendricks Chapel, which now reach hundreds of thousands of people each year, to ensure the digital and virtual offerings can best create and sustain an environment best suited to fulfill the mission and vision of Hendricks Chapel.
  • In partnership with the Events Coordinator of Hendricks Chapel, provide administrative oversight for the reservation and usage of all chapel physical spaces, to ensure all programs and services hosted at Hendricks Chapel are fully aligned with the mission and vision of Hendricks Chapel.
Planning and Implementation of Events
  • In partnership with chaplains, staff, and campus partners, direct the overall quality control of chapel operations related to events, programs, services, hospitality, and facilities, such as: staging, information technology, sound, lighting, and general details to ensure overall excellence.
  • In coordination with the Dean of Hendricks Chapel, direct the implementation of signature events sponsored by Hendricks Chapel, such as the annual Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Celebration, Holidays at Hendricks, Service of Commemoration, the Blessing of Students, and others, all of which impact thousands of guests.
  • In coordination with the Budget Manager, ensure the proper billing of chapel guests and coordinate the timely collection of fees and suitable accounting.
Staff Supervision
  • Provide training, supervision, and ongoing professional development for the Events Coordinator, and the office coordinator, to ensure an expanded impact of Hendricks Chapel.
  • Provide direction for over fifty (50) student employees, which includes oversight of supervision, goal setting, professional development, etc.
  • Serve as the primary staff point-person in relationships to People’s Place Café, the student-operated coffee shop located in Hendricks Chapel, which receives nearly 40,000 visits per academic year.
External Relations
  • Manage the Chapel’s expanding event-related operations in partnership with those external to the campus community, such as weddings and memorial. This responsibility includes reservation intake, planning with guests, invoicing, evaluation, and supervision of respective student and professional employees.
  • Explore new and innovative opportunities to enhance external relations in accordance with the mission and vision of Hendricks Chapel.
