The George Mason University Honors College is seeking candidates for the position of Academic Advisor. Responsibilities:

We are looking for an organized, energetic, self-motivated academic advisor who will be responsible for equitable and inclusive group and individual academic advising of undergraduates in the Honors College. Responsibilities will include:

  • Monitoring student progress and proactive advising of a large caseload of Honors College students; Communicating Honors College and major degree requirements; Collaborating and consulting with academic advisors in the appropriate major/minor departments; Collaborate with offices across campus to support students’ academic progress; Keeping current on continually changing curriculum requirements; Helping students explore alternative majors, double majors, and minors; Educating students about university deadlines, policies, and procedures; Helping students initiate academic actions (e.g., course substitutions, transfer credit inquires and evaluations); Developing and conveying information about available opportunities (e.g., internships, study abroad, research experiences, special programs). Maintaining records of student success in obtaining available opportunities; Performing informal graduation audits; Maintaining advising materials and student records; Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) laws; Participating in orientation and recruitment activities, including facilitating new student orientation advising for freshmen students; Communicating student needs, concerns, and requests to appropriate members of the Honors College team; Supporting students with academic progress challenges or special requests. When appropriate, referring them to partner offices and personnel; and Serving on committees, as appropriate.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and experience; Demonstrated experience (generally 2+ years) in academic advising, student career counseling, or providing student support within a higher education setting; Demonstrated experience working with and supporting a diverse student population including students who have historically been underrepresented/underserved in higher education; Demonstrated skill in effective oral and written communication; organizational and problem-solving skills; Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects at the same time; Ability to work independently while also working in a collaborative team environment; and Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues inside and outside of the Honors College.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of academic advising experience at the community college or university level; Experience with advising technology/programs (e.g., Ellucian Banner, Degree Works, Navigate, Stellic, etc.); and Knowledge of the principles, practices and trends in the areas of academic advising, student persistence, retention, and degree completion.
