Position Summary

A research technician position is available in the lab of Prof. Chong Xie at Rice University (Houston TX). Our lab is focused on the development of ultra-flexible polymer neural probes for electrophysiological recording of brain activity in small animals. We strive to create an electrode for stable chronic recordings lasting multiple months with the goal of translation of this technology for clinical use in humans.

We are looking for the veterinary technician capable of assisting and eventually independently performing surgeries for neural implantation in rodents. You will be playing a key supporting role in a number of projects that aim at testing the long-term performance of neural probes developed in our lab and also used by collaborating organizations throughout the Neuroengineering Initiative at Rice University. Ideal candidate will have prior experience working with animals in a regulated research environment and be highly motivated to learn specific surgical skills necessary to perform the neural probe implantation.

Essential Functions
  • Comply with all guidelines and regulations from IACUC and ARF for animal care and surgical protocols
  • Assists and eventually independently perform surgeries and pre- and post-surgical care of animals (mice and rats)
  • Assists in conducting research and experiments
  • Collects, tracks and analyzes data using spreadsheets and databases
  • Assists in the setup of the laboratory and day-to-day laboratory technical operations including promoting safety, maintaining equipment, creating kits and preparing reagents
  • Monitors and maintains repository of clinical samples
  • Prepares procurement requests and orders materials and supplies, manages samples and stocks database, sets-up and manages experiments, and maintains research results for publications
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • HS Diploma and 5 years of relevant experience
  • Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software, Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficiency in relevant math and research skills
  • Good organization skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to listen and communicate (verbal, written)
  • Ability to work independently and in team environments
  • Ability to conduct evaluate and analyze data
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards
Subsitutions
  • Any education above the required amount of education can be substituted on a year-by-year basis for the experience requirement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study
  • Experience with conducting surgeries for neural probe implantations in small animals
  • Candidates with previous research roles, animal management, and data collection experience are preferred
