Description

Reporting to the Executive Vice Dean, the Associate Dean for DEIB will provide strategic vision and leadership for diversity and inclusion activities in the School of Nursing and collaborate on activities in the university and health system. This position will work closely with the Dean, Executive Vice Dean, and Associate Deans, providing proactive and strategic guidance in areas such as climate and culture and supporting the school’s Diversity Committee chaired by the dean. Additionally, this role will lead to internal assessments of current policies and practices identifying perceived or actual barriers to opportunity. The Associate Dean will also collaborate with the Vice Provost for Diversity and Inclusion & Chief Diversity Officer to advance the university’s Roadmap on Diversity and Inclusion. The Associate Dean will work together with faculty, staff, and students to advance the school’s diversity plan, aligning it with our overall strategic plan. The position will support the advancement of a diverse faculty, on both tenure and non-tenure tracks, inclusive student recruitment and academic success efforts, and focused development and engagement of staff.

This is a full-time leadership position open to all qualified candidates (non-faculty candidates are encouraged to apply). Faculty candidates who desire to teach or do research can negotiate to include that in the role.

Responsibilities
  • Work with University, Johns Hopkins Health System and other key partners to advance strategic priorities.
  • Provide strategic direction, operational oversight and faculty guidance for the School’s diversity plan in alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Coordinate activities of the school’s diversity committee
  • Serve as a leader in building and fostering diversity and inclusion, locally, nationally and internationally.
  • Work with the Executive Vice Dean and academic leadership to develop strategies, through a diversity and inclusion plan, that are designed to support diversity in the curriculum
  • Collaborate with the HR director with diverse and inclusive recruitment, retention, and development strategies specific to staff.
  • Represent the School of Nursing senior managers at Johns Hopkins Health System, and other clinical partners and affiliates in Baltimore and the surrounding area to foster the School’s mission as well as the university’s Hopkins Local initiative(s).
  • Work with Associate Dean for Enrollment Management and Affairs to ensure holistic admission criteria and monitoring of diversity and inclusion strategies.
  • Assist the dean in developing collaborations with university leaders, public and private partners, and policy and political agencies to advance the School’s diversity and inclusion agenda.
  • Responsible for the development, oversight, and monitoring of the school’s diversity plan.
  • Support the delivery of individual and organizational needs assessment in the areas of diversity and inclusion.
  • Participate in annual faculty reviews as requested.
  • Provide expertise on the interpretation of data measuring the SON’s efforts to hire a diverse and inclusive faculty and staff
  • Work collaboratively with the executive leadership team to achieve school and university goals.
  • Support faculty and staff development programs focused on creating and assessing diverse classrooms.

Number of direct reports: Faculty member (30%) for data collection; Director for DEI, Senior Administrator for DEI Coordinator; student worker(s)

Qualifications
  • Qualified candidates will have a minimum of a master’s degree and at least five years of related DEI experience.
  • A distinguished record of interprofessional collaboration and partnerships.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in diversity and inclusion, responsible for developing or supporting strategic initiatives, measurement, and reporting performance to leadership.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; listening, oral, and written communication.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment preferred.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
