Job Description:
North Orange Continuing Education is now accepting applications for part-time non-credit Basic Skills (Learning Center, High School Diploma, GED/HiSET, and English and Math College Prep) instructors to teach at our main campuses, community-based locations, and online through Distance Education (DE). Various schedules and locations are available. Hours will vary depending on class(es) assigned. Most Basic Skills classes are offered Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am - 2:45 pm and 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm.

Primary Purpose:
Duties and responsibilities as presented are intended to be representative and not restrictive. The District reserves the right to modify the assignment and allocation of duties in accordance with operational needs.

The award of all degrees must be verifiable on a legible transcript. If degree award date is not posted on transcript your application will be deemed incomplete and removed from consideration.

Grade cards will not be accepted in lieu of transcripts.

Minimum Qualifications:
§ 53412. Minimum Qualifications for Instructors of Basic Skills Noncredit Courses.

Except as provided elsewhere in this article, the minimum qualifications for service as a faculty member teaching a noncredit course shall be the same as the minimum qualifications for credit instruction in the appropriate discipline, or as follows:

Interdisciplinary- Basic Skills: Noncredit
Bachelor’s degree in any social science, humanities, mathematics, or natural science discipline or in liberal studies as appropriate for the course.

OR

Possess a valid California teaching credential authorizing service in a community college in the appropriate subject matter area;

OR

The equivalent. Equivalent qualifications may include related education, training, employment and professional experience that would be equal to the required degree(s) and experience in this field as determined by the District Equivalency Committee.

Commitment to diversity. All applicants must have demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff. The applicant must be able to demonstrate how these factors relate to the need for equity minded practices within the classroom.

Desirable Qualifications:
Economics Instructor, Master’s degree in economics plus experience teaching economics courses for high school, adult education, or community college.
U.S. History Instructor, Master’s degree in history plus experience teaching history courses for high school, adult education, or community college.

Civics Instructor, Master’s degree in government/political science plus experience teaching civics courses for high school, adult education, or community college.

Science Instructor, Master’s degree in any science field.

Experience with curriculum development.

Possession of strong computer skills and ability to learn and effectively use technology and software.

Demonstrated ability to integrate 21st century learning skills and digital literacy effectively into instruction.

Two or more years of experience teaching distance education courses, including demonstrated experience with online learning management systems (LMS) such as Canvas, Google Classroom, Blackboard, and/or Moodle.

Work Schedule: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, District employees are currently working a hybrid schedule of remote work and in-person each week through December 2021. Number of in-person days may vary by position/department. Potentially transitioning to fully in-person January 2022. Further clarification of work schedule can be discussed with Hiring Manager if selected as an interview candidate.


This is a continuous recruitment to fill part-time, and temporary faculty assignments on an as-needed basis. When the need to fill arises, the department will refer to this pool of part-time faculty.

Instructors are expected to comply with the training requirements to teach online or remotely as determined by Campus standards. Currently, NOCE instructors must possess one of the following to be eligible for an online teaching assignment:

1. NOCE Online Teaching Certification (“OTC”)
2. @ONE Online Teaching Certificate including all of the following training courses: 1. Introduction to Course Design 2. 10-10-10: Communication That Matters 3. Assessment in Digital Learning 4. Creating Accessible Course Content, and 5. Online Teaching & Design Capstone
3. Equivalency to NOCE Online Teaching Certificate (“OTC”), as approved by the NOCE Distance Education Advisory Group. Please see pages 9-10 in the NOCE Distance Education Faculty Handbook for requirements.
