Assistant Professor of Social Work & Sociology

Job Summary:

We are seeking candidates with an earned doctorate in Social Work, Sociology. The successful candidate also will have earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW). Areas of specialization are open, and the department is interested in providing students with opportunities to understand the application of social work principles to issues such as social inequality and disparities, anti-racism, behavioral health, research methods and public policy. We seek dynamic faculty who model the knowledge, skills and values necessary for ethical practice.

Minimum Qualifications:

PhD in Social Work or Sociology by Fall of 2023
MSW

Essential Functions:

Applicants should be flexible with regard to teaching assignments and confident in their abilities to teach courses within their areas of expertise, as well as core courses such as, Introduction to Sociology, Social Theory, Social Inequalities, and Social Change. We welcome candidates who will place an emphasis on active learning and quality teaching in a small classroom setting and who can expertly integrate relevant sociocultural and diversity content and issues into their teaching.

The Successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to contribute to a diverse learning environment and facilitate student learning on anti-racist and anti-oppressive social work practice.

The successful candidate will also have a promising and active research agenda that leads to peer reviewed publications and presentations.

In summary, essential duties include:
  • Undergraduate instruction with an expectation of competence in the use of instructional technology
  • Responsible for advisement of students
  • Participation in departmental activities
  • Active research agenda
  • A commitment to contribute to a diverse learning environment and facilitate student learning on anti-racist and anti -oppressive social work practice
Preferred Qualifications:

Prior experience teaching at the college level.

About the Department:

The Social Work & Sociology department is one of four departments in the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The other departments are psychology, criminal justice, and teacher education. The School also has graduate programs as follows: MA School Psychology; MA Clinical Mental Health Counseling; Masters of Arts in Teaching; Masters of Education, Contemporary Curriculum and Instruction.

The Social Work & Sociology department in collaboration with the Criminal Justice department is launching a dual major in Social Work and Criminal Justice. The Social Work Program is also in the process of creating a fully online MSW program.

The Social Work & Sociology Department and the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences are committed to advancing a diverse, equitable, and inclusive learning environment. The School has taken leadership with several social justice initiatives, including Creating an Inclusive Community dialogues, the Marist Center for Social Justice Research, a Social Justice minor, and the Marist College Diversity Leadership Institute.
