The University of Lynchburg, a private regional university, located in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia, is seeking a full-time Assistant/Associate Professor of Music (Director of Choral Activities) to join our Music Faculty.

The Assistant/Associate Professor of Music (Director of Choral Activities) reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Associate Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts. The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the Associate Dean of the School of Visual and Performing Arts. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

  • Tenure-track, 9-month position

Job Purpose: To provide leadership for choral ensembles. applied voice lessons, and music instruction of as assigned.

Specific Job Duties:

  • Conducting Concert Choir, Choral Union (adult community choir), and additional chamber ensemble(s) as warranted.
  • Teaching courses in music education as needed (introduction to music education, choral methods, diction I and II).
  • Oversee service learning project: Music Bridge Program (MUSC 164).
  • Teaching applied voice as needed.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Recruiting undergraduate music students (Visual and Performing Arts Scholarship).
  • Oversee vocal music studio and vocal performance ensembles.
  • Mentoring future music educators and engage fully in the academic and artistic life of the university.
  • Serve as faculty advisor for Collegiate Music Education Association (CoVMEA).
  • Collaborating with colleagues on curriculum development.
  • Supervising student research projects (honors in music).
  • Engage in scholarly activities and service to the University and community.

Teaching load:

  • The normal teaching load is 12 hours per semester.
  • This would consist of two/three choral ensembles (Concert Choir, Lynchburg Singers, Choral Union), course(s) in vocal music education (choral methods, diction, introduction to music education), and applied voice (as needed).

Starting Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience.

Schedule:

  • On campus to teach all courses/ensemble/lesson.
  • Schedule office hours as outlined in the faculty handbook (normally 10 hours a week).
  • This will include some evening and weekends to meet needs of department as required.

Experience/Skills:

  • Teaching applied voice and music education classes.
  • Conduct a variety of choral ensembles.
  • Piano proficiency.

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged periods standing (conducting) or sitting at a desk (office hours).
  • Ability to lift 30 lbs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned a Doctorate (DMA/PhD) in Music Education or Choral Conducting.
  • A minimum of three years full-time teaching experience at the K-12 level.
  • Experience with a variety of choral ensembles (e.g., mixed choir, chamber ensembles, gospel choir, community, others).
  • The candidate must possess a record of teaching, scholarship, and service commensurate with the appointment.
  • A primary interest in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students at a liberal arts institution.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and have the ability to understand, comprehend and follow instructions
