Postdoctoral Researcher -neuroimaging project on representation of possibility

Job Details

Description

Applications are invited for the position of Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Cognitive Science Program at Dartmouth College, to take the lead on a project investigating the representational structures underlying different kinds of nonactual thought, including hypothetical and counterfactual thought, temporally displaced events, and implicit representations of possibility. The position is associated with the Programs in Cognitive Science and Department of Philosophy at Dartmouth College.

The aim of this project is to explore how human brains support the representation of different forms of non-actual content in an effort to determine whether they share common representational structure and to what extent they are supported by a shared network of brain regions.

Project Description: Prospection and related forms of modal thought such as hypothetical and counterfactual thinking are theorized to be important for central aspects of free will and agency and underwrite a much of high-level cognition. Despite the centrality these forms of thought in our lives, relatively little is understood about their shared neural basis or representational structure. This project will involve neuroimaging (primarily fMRI) and behavioral experiments which require subjects to actively construct or reason about events that vary along a number of dimensions (e.g., actual/non-actual, past/present/future, personal/impersonal). The data will be investigated using multivariate analyses, including Representational Similarity Analysis, with the aim of uncovering not only the network of brain regions that are support non-actual event representation, but also the shared representational structure of different forms of modal thought.

Qualifications

Competitive candidates will have demonstrated interdisciplinary interests and will have sufficient experience to help lead the project, including conducting neuroimaging and behavioral studies, analyzing the resulting data, and writing. Applicants should submit a cover letter that states their research interests, a curriculum vitae, one piece of written work, and contact information for three letters of reference. Applications from women and minorities are encouraged.
