Job Description:

The Department of Campus Recreation at the State University of New York College at Oneonta invites applications for the part time position of Outdoor & Sport Recreation Assistant. Expectations include, but are not limited to, assisting with trip planning, occasional trip field work, managing equipment inventory, overseeing the equipment rental program, assist with student staff recruitment & training, scheduling of student workers, assist processing team rosters, and other tasks as needed.

The Outdoor Programs & Sports Recreation Assistant reports to the Director of Campus Recreation & Director of Outdoor Programs as a part of the Recreation team in the Division of Student Affairs. This position may have a non-traditional work schedule.

Duties include but are not limited to:

Outdoor Programs
  • This position will require occasional outdoor field-based work; i.e., Backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, climbing, snowshoeing, XC skiing, caving, cycling, whitewater rafting, etc. (10-30 days per year)
  • Organize, clean, maintain, and inventory outdoor equipment. Advise Director on equipment needs
  • Develop rental check-in and check-out procedures
  • Assist in the supervision & training of student staff.
  • Assist in OSOL (Oneonta School of Outdoor Leadership) preparation, lessons, and programming.
  • Contribute to the continued development of the Outdoor Recreation Risk Management Plan, including prompt and accurate documentation, participating in annual debriefs, and evaluating & updating staff trainings as needed.
  • Managing program risks in the field
  • Scheduling student staff.
  • Assist in developing and implementing systems that create a work environment that is welcoming, reduces risk, and cultivates community
  • Assist with other program functions as needed
Sports Recreation
  • Administrative support
  • Schedule open recreational activities
  • Process team rosters
  • Schedule league contests
  • Enforce policies and procedures
  • Ensure worker and participant safety
  • Assist in processing student worker timesheets
  • Supervise staff during sports competitions
  • Setup and breakdown of athletic equipment
  • Other program related tasks as needed

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of Wilderness First Aid & CPR/AED or willingness to obtain within first 90 days of employment.
  • Proficient in one or more outdoor activities
  • Experience instructing the outdoor field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills
  • Contributing team member
Preferred:
  • Degree in Recreation, Outdoor Leadership, Sports Management, or a related field
  • Wilderness First Responder certification & CPR/AED
  • Knowledge of sports rules & equipment
  • Experience working in the outdoor education/recreation field
  • Certification in one or more outdoor activities from ACA, ACCT, AMGA, PCIA, PSIA, USA Cycling, PMBIA, etc.
  • Experience officiating one or several sports
  • Ability to create a positive culture
  • Experience working with and serving diverse populations
