The Computing and Software Systems (CSS) Division of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) invites applications for a tenure track position at the rank of assistant professor. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a full-time (100% FTE) basis for a nine-month academic year appointment beginning September 16, 2023.

We welcome applications from all disciplines in computing and software systems, including but not limited to research and teaching interests in: software engineering, network-centric computing (including networking, cybersecurity, Internet of Things, and mobile and edge computing), data-centric computing (including data science, machine learning, and databases), and entertainment computing. Interdisciplinary work is encouraged. 

The following will be expected of the successful candidate:

  • Teaching excellence: They will be expected to engage in excellent teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to support and enhance learning for diverse populations. They will be expected to teach a wide variety of computer science courses including lower-level core courses, mentor undergraduate students in research, supervise graduate students, and teach and provide academic advising to students at all levels. 

  • Contributions to diversity and equal opportunity: They will be expected to further UW Bothell's commitment to equity and inclusion and to support the UW Bothell mission and STEM core values, including the values of diversity and equal opportunity.

  • Research: They will be expected to engage in active research through publications, and to establish a funded research program that is amenable to undergraduate and master’s students. They will also be expected to develop externally sponsored research programs.

  • Interdisciplinarity: They will be expected to engage in teaching and research across an interdisciplinary STEM environment.

  • Service, collegiality: They will be expected to establish working relationships with local high-tech companies and industry, collaborate across other units at UW Bothell, the other UW campuses in Seattle and Tacoma, other institutions in the region, and contribute to shared goals.

The School is housed in several buildings on a vibrant campus collocated on a restored 100-acre wetland with an active salmon stream, including the 74,000 square-foot Discovery Hall teaching and laboratory facility, with a new 77,000 square-foot STEM building in collaboration with Cascadia College opening in Fall 2023.

CSS is among the largest computer science departments in the Pacific Northwest. The division offers a BS in Computer Science and Software Engineering, a BA in Applied Computing, a BA in Interactive Media Design (jointly run with the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences), a BS in Computer Engineering (jointly run with Electrical Engineering in the division of Engineering and Mathematics), an MS in Computer Science and Software Engineering, an MS in Cybersecurity Engineering, and a graduate certificate in Software Design and Development with a total of 700 FTE undergraduates and 200 FTE graduate students (including 80 certificate students) enrolled currently. All of our curricula are broadly-based in computer science and software engineering.

The 25 full-time CSS faculty members are committed to excellence in research and teaching in a number of areas, including: augmented reality, bioinformatics, computational biology, computer graphics, computer science education, computer vision, cybersecurity, data mining, high-performance computing, human factors in computing, Internet of Things, parallel and distributed computing, social computing, software engineering, and wireless networks. In the past few years, members of the CSS faculty have been successful in earning grants from NSF, NSA, DHS, and other agencies, foundations, as well as in collaboration with local IT companies including Microsoft, T-Mobile, and Amazon. The division has well-equipped labs and facilities to conduct teaching and research.
