The Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Washington invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor, starting in September 2023, with a specialization in race and media in the United States. Areas of concentration may include but are not limited to African American, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Indigenous, and Latinx film, television, and digital media. The Department is committed to an inclusive, interdisciplinary, and dynamic vision of cinema and media studies. We welcome applications from candidates engaged in innovative research and teaching from any perspective within the full range of historical periods, media, and methods. We also welcome applications from scholars dedicated to comparative, intersectional, trans-Indigenous, and transnational work that crosses geopolitical frontiers and challenges the borders between academic disciplines.

The teaching load consists of four courses per year, and tenure-track faculty have an annual service period of nine months (September 15 through June 16). The University of Washington is a large, urban, public, R1 university located at the heart of Seattle. We seek candidates who can work effectively with diverse student and community populations. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to teach at every level, from the introductory undergraduate lecture auditorium to advanced graduate seminars, and will join us in developing and expanding the curriculum for our fast-growing BA, MA, and PhD programs. The Department of Cinema and Media Studies encourages public-facing scholarship, and the successful candidate will have an opportunity to forge connections with other campus units and Seattle’s many vibrant cultural institutions catering to underrepresented minority communities.
