Description

The Natural Sciences Department at Flagler College in Saint Augustine, FL invites applications for a full-time faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to begin August 2023. We seek a well-rounded scientist and educator with a strong dedication to teaching at the undergraduate level. Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate an engaging, active teaching style utilizing various pedagogies as well as an ability to mentor undergraduate research. The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses within the Coastal Environmental Science and Biology programs and the new Core (General Education) program. There are additional opportunities to teach innovative, intensive courses to the broader student population as part of our new FlagSHIP program. The full-time teaching load at Flagler College consists of 12 contact hours per week of the semester.

The area of specialization is open, but we particularly value candidates that can complement our existing expertise. For example, plant biology and environmental health/epidemiology are two areas we hope to expand. The successful applicant will be expected to develop an active research program that engages undergraduates in authentic research projects. Ideally this research should also lead to peer-reviewed publications and/or undergraduate research presentations at regional and national conferences within the applicant’s discipline. The candidate would also have the opportunity to play a significant role in the development of our Biology program.

Founded in 1968, Flagler College is a historic, teaching-oriented college of about 2,500 undergraduates. The college has a young but vibrant science program and a growing emphasis on STEM education. The location of the college in Saint Augustine, FL, surrounded by the intracoastal waterway and pristine salt marsh and mangrove habitat, and adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean, provides easy access to research study sites. We also regularly collaborate with staff scientists at the nearby Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Qualifications

Requirements:

A Ph.D. in Biology, Environmental Science, Marine Science, or a related field is required.

Preferred qualifications: A candidate that will complement our existing faculty expertise and be able to assist with teaching classes in the molecular realms (e.g. genetics, cell, molecular, and/or physiology).
