General Description

The Director, Innovation Initiatives and Corporate Relations manages a nimble and innovative team that sits in central Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) with a liaison relationship with Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV), the University’s commercialization arm. The Innovation Initiatives and Corporate Relations team is focused on corporate philanthropy and sponsorships. Team members carry portfolios of corporate and individual prospects, as well as providing a central service advising DAR colleagues, managing programs and supporting corporate fundraising priorities across Johns Hopkins University & Medicine (JHU&M).


The Director will oversee a small, but growing team. The team currently includes an Associate Director, Innovation Initiatives and a Senior Administrative Coordinator, who is shared with the Assistant Vice President, Development & Alumni Relations.

This is an influential and visible role within Development and Alumni Relations that requires an ability to build effective relationships up and down the organization, from senior university and faculty leadership to colleagues across Development & Alumni Relations, as well as with high potential prospects like industry executives, entrepreneurs and advisory board members.

This position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Central Fundraising within Development & Alumni Relations with a dotted reporting line to the Senior Adviser to the President for Innovation and Entrepreneurship/Executive Director, Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures. This position will work closely with the offices of Foundation Relations, Principal Gifts, the Vice President for DAR, Annual Giving, Alumni Relations, Prospect Management and Research as well as Development & Alumni Relations teams across JHU&M.



Duties include:

Manage Relationship with Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures

  • Support the vision of the Sr. Advisor to the President / Executive Director, JHTV and develop and execute development strategies. Prepare and staff the Executive Director for travel, presentations, and events related to Development and Alumni Relations.
  • Plan, manage, and coordinate an annual fundraising strategy for JHTV that may range from $250K - $10M+.
  • Oversee and coordinate the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of JHTV’s prospect and donor portfolio, which includes individuals, corporations, foundations, and principal gift prospects.
  • Work closely with JHTV’s Director of Finance and Administration to develop and oversee an updated process for tracking and accounting for JHTV gifts.
  • In tandem with the Associate Director, oversee and coordinate substantive engagement opportunities between prospects/donors and JHTV programs (i.e. mentorship, speaking, advising, event, and investing opportunities) working in coordination with gift officers across JHU&M.
  • Connect external constituents within the broader Hopkins network who have aligned business interests with JHTV.
  • In partnership with JHTV’s chief of staff, manage, cultivate, and grow JHTV’s board of advisors – the Innovation, Development & Entrepreneurship Advisory Board - which includes some JHU Trustees.
  • Oversee the Associate Director, Innovation Initiatives to manage annual giving campaigns for Hopkins entrepreneurship programs, including JHTV, in partnership with the Office of Annual Giving.

Oversee Innovation Initiatives program

  • Oversee the Associate Director and Sr. Admin Coordinator in managing a growing 400+ list of constituents and prospects in the Hopkins “Innovation Ecosystem” (entrepreneurs, investors, industry executives), as well as development research efforts for identification and discovery.
  • Connect high net worth and successful entrepreneurial alums and prospects to the work of JHTV as mentors, donors, and advisors.
  • Build strong relationships with Associate Deans of Development at each school to help them achieve their goals by working with innovation ecosystem prospects. Serve as advocate and advisor to DAR for Innovation Ecosystem prospect identification, due diligence, cultivation, solicitation, and management.
  • Oversee and grow the new Founders’ Pledge program along with the Associate Director, with the goal of expanding membership and converting gifts out of those members closest to a liquidity event.
  • Support the Associate Director in organizing high-touch programming (like Innovation Roundtables and Founders’ Forums), coordinating other relevant alumni events, as well as presidential, dean, faculty, and other senior leaders’ engagement with this Innovation Ecosystem prospect group.
  • Oversee a digital engagement and communications strategy with the help of the Sr. Admin Coordinator, the JHTV Communications team and DAR’s communications team (including newsletters, storytelling, and social media).

Oversee and Grow Corporate Fundraising

  • Serve as a consultant and advisor to DAR colleagues across the institution as they explore and evaluate corporate fundraising opportunities and programs, including advising on corporate or corporate foundation funding opportunities and developing new strategies to attract corporate sponsors for large initiatives.
  • Lead the development of DAR’s corporate fundraising strategy, including developing and presenting a professional development curriculum for DAR staff, working to improve processes, skills and resources related to corporate fundraising.
  • Manage and coordinate resources to develop a top corporate prospect list for DAR, working closely with the Office of Foundation Relations.
  • Develop and manage a small portfolio of priority corporate donors that impact more than one school/division (ex. Microsoft). Work closely with the Executive Director, JHTV, members of the DAR Executive Team and other Development leaders to ensure effective coordination and relationship building with companies where Hopkins has significant professional and research connections and a strong alumni presence.
  • Develop metrics and reports for corporate fundraising that will present philanthropic progress, as well as contributing to overall “corporate investment” in the University, as needed (e.g. tracking contributions other than traditional philanthropy – contracts, equipment, internships, etc).
  • Cultivate and coordinate a network of Hopkins colleagues responsible for corporate fundraising to share information and explore cross-divisional opportunities.
  • Support complex giving conversations in collaboration with the Office of Gift Planning and General Counsel, including backstopping and helping to advise on venture philanthropy opportunities.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Seven years related experience with demonstrated effectiveness inbuilding high-level relationships, working with corporations, investors,and major and principal gift level prospects.
  • This position does not allow for education or experience substitutions.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to lead colleagues at all levels of an organization and work across the institution.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 25% and to be in person in Baltimore with major donors, events, key stakeholder meetings, and to work a hybrid schedule (60%/40% office/home, dependent on work and travel priorities).

  • Strong strategy development and project management skills, including the ability to garner internal buy-in for new strategies and initiatives, set appropriate timelines, motivate internal partners, follow-through on deliverables, and communicate progress.
  • High levels of creativity, initiative, resourcefulness and self-motivation with an ability to work independently and in dynamic, hybrid environment.
  • Passion for innovation, entrepreneurship, and business.
  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy, maintaining confidentiality, and to effectively facilitate groups of colleagues and supporters.
  • High degree of comfort and skill working across multiple systems and software, including MS Office (we actively use TEAMS for communication and project management) and CRM databases
