Salary Basis: 9 month

Responsibilities:
The Department of Art at Delta State University invites actively engaged artists to apply for a tenure-track faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design. Two-years teaching experience and strong evidence of a developed professional studio career is preferred but not required. This full-time appointment offers a competitive salary and benefits package and will commence August 2022. Applicants with diverse cultural, ethnic and national perspectives are encouraged to apply.

We are open to a range of approaches in Graphic Design including print, web design, multimedia, motion graphics, illustration, digital photography, interactive/computational media design, augmented/virtual/mixed reality design, interaction design, data visualization, and/or interactive media arts. We are interested in artists who work in any (or more than one) of these areas, and who has an active creative practice which includes a national and/or international record of exhibitions, festivals, projects, or other recognized forms of distribution.

Candidates must have a terminal degree in one of these fields by the start date of the appointment; have expertise in one or more areas of Graphic Design; be prepared to engage with existing university and college strategic areas; have an understanding of emerging media; and an eagerness to collaborate with faculty across other disciplines. Candidates must have a well-developed research agenda that will inform and advance current trends in the field through creative production, experimentation, collaboration, exhibition and/or publication. It is our intention that graduates with a concentration in Graphic Design become innovative artists who are well prepared technically and conceptually for a lifelong career as a graphic designer.

Successful candidates will have or show potential for having a national or international record of excellence in creative practice, innovative research, substantive scholarship and effective teaching. All candidates should have a strong interest in collaborative work as well as experience in, or a commitment to, working with diverse student populations in a culturally diverse work and educational environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The ideal candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses, mentor students within the context of an interdisciplinary art and design program and advise graduate students in a MFA low-residency program that is being initiated in 2022.

Teaching responsibilities include all introductory and upper level Graphic Design courses as well as Digital Media Arts courses including Motion Graphics. Candidates must possess excellent technical skills with Mac computers and an in-depth knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Candidates must also be well versed in HTML, CSS, and JQuery. Experience with responsive web design, app design, CMS, or After Effects is a plus.

The position carries a 3:3 teaching load and the expectation of service to the department and the university. Upper-level courses may be stacked and some independent studies may be included. In addition to our Art majors, these courses may also interest students from across the university. The candidate will maintain facilities, keep an active professional practice, and participate in the University community. Additional duties include overseeing the digital computer lab, serving on departmental committees, and ongoing professional research.

Qualifications:
MFA or other terminal degree required, professional experience and two to five years of college-level teaching experience preferred. Strong candidates will have some experience developing new courses that engage with contemporary practices, techniques, and issues in the field of Graphic Design.

Candidates must also be able to communicate with students from diverse backgrounds and eagerness to teach in and advance the graphic design concentration.

Strong candidates will possess the majority of the following skills:
