Postdoctoral Fellow, In situ TEM and Machine Learning at Johns Hopkins University and Sandia


Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at Johns Hopkins University, with a designated visiting scholar position at Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, NM). The position will focus on in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) experiments and machine learning. Experiments will be performed under various combinations of extreme environments utilizing facilities at both the Johns Hopkins University Materials Characterization and Processing Center and the in-situ ion irradiation TEM (I3TEM) facility at Sandia National Laboratories (Albuquerque, NM). This work will involve in-situ ion irradiation coupled with other in-situ stimuli, such as mechanical strain, heating, and various environments and machine learning techniques.

The successful applicant will be part of a dynamic, multi-university team which includes both theoretical and experimental personnel. The focus of the applicant will be to investigate and characterize radiation damage processes in metallic materials, including pure metals and high entropy alloys.

Ideal candidates will have experience with in-situ and high resolution TEM, sample fabrication including focused-ion beam (FIB) lift-out methods, and defect and microstructural analysis of metallic systems


Basic Qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in materials science, physics, mechanical engineering, or related disciplines is required.
  • Experience with in situ TEM imaging and diffraction of metallic materials.
  • Knowledge of crystalline defects and microstructure.
  • Experience image processing and image techniques.
  • Experience in scripting/programming (Python, Matlab, C++) for data processing.
  • Must be comfortable to travel to Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM 87123
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of aberration corrected high resolution TEM.
  • Experience with machine learning techniques.
  • Ability to disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed articles and presentations.
  • Knowledge of precession electron diffraction and/or electron backscattered diffraction.
