MLS from an ALA-accredited institution


If the applicant does not have an MLS, a master's or doctoral degree in photography or a related field such as fine arts or art history is required.

Individuals without an MLS must complete the MLS degree within a specific period of time. They will be provided a minimum of 36 months from date of hire.

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply archival principles to photographic collections.
  • Demonstrated ability to appraise, arrange, and describe archival photographic collections.
  • Ability to teach and participate in outreach activities such as class lectures, exhibits, and presentations and the desire to interact with and mentor students.
  • Knowledge of and practical experience in photography (digital and analog), including management of physical, digitized, and born-digital photographic images.
  • Ability to advise and instruct students and staff in correct processing procedures for photographs.


  • Knowledge of the history and technical aspects of photography and photographic preservation of the numerous different photographic processes.
  • A second master’s degree or Ph.D. in photography or a related field such as fine arts or art history.
  • Knowledge of chemistry insofar as photographic chemicals, safety and hazardous waste is concerned
  • Knowledge of the technical skills, tools and procedures commonly used in a photographic darkroom and the ability to manage the same.


  • Create accession records and processing plans for new acquisitions following DACS standards.
  • Selectively acquire primary source materials that support the teaching of the history of photography.
  • Provide reference and research support.
  • Teach library instruction/information literacy classes; make class presentations on Special Collections resources.
  • Select appropriate materials from photograph collections for digitization and ensure professional standards and best practices are followed regarding the arrangement, description, and long-term care and preservation of born-digital photographic materials.
  • Mentor students and student employees.
  • Manage and supervise the darkroom.
  • Stay abreast of trends, processes, and scholarship related to handling born-digital photographic collections, market values for photographs, and preservation and access issues.
  • Produce significant research and original contributions, including exhibits, relevant to librarianship and/or fields appropriate to subject assignment.
