This senior information systems specialist is a member of a modern technical team responsible for the development and advancement of SUNY Cortland’s Student Information System ( SIS ) in the Department of Systems Administration and Web Services ( SAWS ). The senior information systems specialist, reports to the assistant director of administrative computing and serves as an advanced technical resource for support and maintenance of integrations with the Banner ERP system and other university systems. The position requires a thorough knowledge of Ellucian Banner, collaboration with users, and understanding of their office procedures/processes, as well as strong analyst and technical skills. This individual will work closely with faculty and staff to provide data to support academic and administrative operations. Major Responsibilities
  • Perform complex analytical and programming activities associated with supporting systems and interfaces.
  • Design, perform analysis, and author programming associated with maintenance, modifications, and enhancements to existing administrative applications
  • Use various development tools to provide update and inquiry access to academic and administrative data.
  • Consult with users to determine systems and program requirements and objectives and to identify problems in existing programs and systems
  • Maintain an understanding of related table structures and views and follows established data block, reporting, and security standards.
  • Serve as liaison to vendor(s) for application support and problem resolution; identifies, tracks, and responds to user issues.
  • Investigate and become an expert in new technologies with the intent of implementation as well as to provide training to other team members and be a source for the developed standards pertaining to these technologies.
  • Promote active communication between functional users and team members. Contributes appropriately to conversations and meetings. Accurately prepares written and verbal correspondence that is coherent, effective, and professional.
  • Provide technical consultation to the assistant director, project leaders, managers, and departments.
  • Develop and maintain programming change/enhancement request log; prioritizes projects at the direction of the director and assistant director.
  • Maintain and review a centrally located repository of documentation.
  • Work with Project Manager to plan, develop and maintain an accurate project portfolio, including active projects, planned projects, and a project backlog.
  • Meet with management to define and design ways to update applications to meet the ongoing changing requirements of the entire university.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
Reports to the assistant director of administrative computing Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 or more years’ relevant programming experience; OR i n lieu of degree; 7 years of full-time directly related experience; OR a combination of higher education and experience totaling 7 years may be considered.
  • Experience with relational database systems and SQL
  • Experience testing and debugging computer programs and evidence of technical skills and problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment with colleagues and customers using effective interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated analytical skills.
  • Proven understanding of security measures as they apply to a database environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems/Sciences, or a related field
  • Experience working in a large complex organization
  • Proven understanding of Security measures as they apply to a database environment.
  • Relevant experience integrating business systems and applications in a higher education environment
  • Experience working with Banner Student system
  • Experience building interfaces and integrations between disparate systems
  • Experience with Linux and Shell scripting
  • Ability to understand languages, tools, and frameworks such as C, Groovy/Grails, Java, PHP, PL/ SQL, Python, XML, Eclipse, and an SCM
