The University of Southern Maine invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor in Hospitality Management for our Fall 2023 Semester, beginning August 28, 2023. The position is in the Program of Tourism & Hospitality (TAH), an interdisciplinary undergraduate degree program, which resides within the Muskie School of Public Service in the College of Management and Human Service.

The primary responsibility will be teaching undergraduate hospitality management courses in various modalities (in person, online, hyflex, immersive), with an emphasis on sustainability and community engaged learning. Classes on lodging, food and beverage, and event management will be the focus. Other responsibilities include scholarship (theoretical and applied research are equally valued) in hospitality management, and service, such as building partnerships with the industry and other campuses across the University, advising students, placing, and supervising interns, and overseeing TAH student groups. Tenure track and tenured faculty at USM typically teach three courses per academic semester although there is some flexibility based on other activities and scholarship.

The Program in Tourism & Hospitality is an innovative undergraduate program that capitalizes on the status of Maine as a premier vacation destination, with diverse culinary, arts, events, adventure, and nature tourism opportunities, and an established and thriving hospitality sector. This position will begin in Fall 2023 on our Portland Campus and will pay annual salary of $64,750 at the Assistant Professor level and $74,500 for an Associate Professor level candidate. This is an on campus, in-person teaching position.

Qualifications:
  • Candidates must be ABD or have a Ph.D. in Hospitality Management, Tourism, or other related field.
Preferred:
  • Previous teaching experience in tourism and hospitality management or other related field is strongly preferred.
  • Preference will be given to those with strong industry experience and credentials in lodging, food and beverage, local food and craft beer, healthcare, sustainability, and/or event management.
  • Teaching in various modalities such as online, incorporating community engaged learning, experience with “teaching hotels”, coordinating internships, and international travel classes is preferred.
  • Evidence of an entrepreneurial spirit, ability to work well with others, collaborate, develop programs, as well as a commitment to diversity and non-traditional student success are considered assets.
