The Counseling and DisAbility Professional provides developmental and educational support to GTCC students in the form of assessment, short-term personal counseling, academic advising, test interpretation, and information and referral services. Conducts individual intake interviews, documents case records, and provides support services for students regarding anxiety/depression, alcohol and substance abuse, relationship issues, stress, suicide, domestic violence, crisis intervention, and assisting in appropriate psychiatric referrals. It also provides academic advising and career development counseling. The position will work with the Director to identify appropriate student populations for group counseling and outreach programming; designs and facilitates group counseling services and psycho-educational workshops and campaigns for specific student issues. The position will work with individuals and groups in a holistic, cognitive-behavioral capacity to effectively address developmental challenges and barriers to success. Provides mental health strategies in an effort to retain students and assist them in achieving their academic goals. Serves as a member of the student behavioral intervention team for the College in the absence of the Director of Counseling.This position will work with staff and faculty to provide instruction and services to students with disabilities. This position will provide intake, analyzes documentation to determine appropriate accommodations, maintains confidential student records, provides academic and personal counseling, networks with and refers to outside agencies, and participates in faculty and staff training. This position is responsible for ensuring that services to students with documented disabilities are provided in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Education Required:
  • Master's degree in counseling, social work, psychology, student development, or related field from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution
  • Certification and/or licensure as a mental health professional (LCMHC, (A) LCSW(P)

Experience Required:
  • At least 1 year of counseling, social work psychology, student development, special education experience, or acceptable equivalent of internship and education
Experience Preferred:
  • 2 years of working with students with disabilities, specifically learning-disabled students in a post-secondary setting, is preferred.
  • 2 years of counseling, social work psychology, student development, special education experience or the acceptable equivalent of internship and education
  • Community college experience preferred.
