About Central State University

Central State University (CSU), an 1890 Land-Grant Institution, is located in Wilberforce, Ohio. CSU has a traditional enrollment of approximately 2,000 and an online enrollment via Central State University Global of 3,500. CSU offers bachelor’s degrees in 40 disciplines and an online Master of Business Administration. CSU Global received United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) Certification in 2022 and was ranked #27 for the Best Online Degrees in Ohio by University HQ. Central State’s academic programs are managed in four colleges: the John W. Garland College of Engineering, Science, Technology, and Agriculture; the College of Education; the College of Business; and the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. The University has grown steadily since its founding in 1887, and its 1890 land-grant focus has driven an increase in the University’s sponsored research activity by 166% over the last two years.

About the Central State University Foundation (CSUF)

The CSUF was incorporated on December 22, 1965, as a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization to simulate voluntary private support from alumni, parents, friends, corporations, foundations, and others for the benefit of Central State University. In addition to raising money, the CSUF’s mission is to manage, distribute, and steward private resources to support the various missions of the University.

Vision

Central State University is the premier 1890 Land-Grant Institution of excellence in teaching, learning, and research that embraces diversity and innovation in a global society.

Mission

Central State University, a proud HBCU, fosters academic excellence within a nurturing living-learning environment and graduates a diverse student population prepared for leadership, research, and service in Ohio and beyond.

History

For over 135 years, Central State University has educated bright, principled scholars and leaders. In 1887, the Ohio General Assembly enacted legislation that created the Combined Normal and Industrial Department at Wilberforce University. This Department would eventually become Central State University. The statute establishing the Combined Normal and Industrial Department declared that the institution was “open to all applicants of good and moral character,” indicating no limitations as to race, color, sex, or creed. Although the Combined Normal and Industrial Department operated as part of Wilberforce University in many aspects, a separate board of trustees was appointed to govern the state financed operations. The name was changed in 1951 to Central State College, and in 1965, the institution achieved University status. Central State is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
