Title: Assistant Dean of Admission

Position Purpose:

Guided by the tenets of the Bates Mission Statement, the Assistant Dean of Admission serves as a member of the Admission team to recruit, admit, and enroll an academically talented and diverse class of students. Works closely with deans, counselors, operations team, campus partners, and secondary school counselors. This position will work closely with the Senior Associate Dean of Admission & Director of Communications and Marketing and our colleagues in the Bates Communications Office (BCO). Collaborate with the Communications Team, student employees, and campus partners to develop a multi-layered (print, email, social media, video) communications plan for multiple audiences (prospects, inquirers, applicants, enrolls, parents, and counselors).

Job Duties:
  • Represent Bates at high school visits, college fairs, and other off- and on-campus recruiting events.
  • Manage geographic territories as assigned; coordinate 4 to 6 weeks of in-person and virtual travel per year; develop an annual recruitment plan and evaluate effectiveness of each activity; recommend improvements and changes in strategy as appropriate
  • Work in pairs or as part of a team to evaluate first-year and transfer applications.
  • Lead on-campus and virtual information sessions and counsel families through the admission and financial aid process.
  • Engage with key constituents such as alumni, current students, high school counselors, and community-based organizations and respond to concerns or inquiries from prospective students, parents, college/guidance counselors, coaches, alumni/ae, and other constituents.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within Admission and across the college (i.e. Student Financial Services, Communications, Harward Center, Purposeful Work, Office of Intercultural Education, Athletics, etc).
  • Communications Team: With the guidance of the Senior Associate Dean & Director of Communications and Marketing, this position will serve as one of the office liaisons to the Bates Communication Office (BCO) and will coordinate all communications projects; help to strategically develop, execute, maintain, refine, and expand a multi-layered (print, email, social media, video) communication plan for multiple constituents (prospects, inquirers, applicants, admits, enrolls, parents, and counselors); partner with Director of Operations on the delivery of communication outreach.
  • Slate Team: Work with Information Systems Manager on maintaining, updating, and testing the office’s CRM; assist on various projects to explore CRM’s functions and features with the goal of streamlining our processes.
  • International Admissions Team: serve as territory manager for several countries or region of the world.
  • Yield Team: Collaborate with the Admission Events, Communications, Alumni in Admission, and Students in Admission teams to develop and implement a multi-layered yield plan that incorporates on- and off-campus events; email, print, social media communication; and outreach from students, staff, faculty, and alumni.
  • Final Transcript Review: Review final grades of all enrolling students from territories; alert Director of Admission of any moderate or serious declines in grades.
  • Attend designated in-person/virtual conferences or other professional development activities.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Admission or the Vice President of Enrollment & Dean of Admission and Financial Aid.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
Experience
  • At least 2-3 years of experience in admission or in a student/customer services, academic, and/or non-profit setting are preferred but not required.
  • Familiarity with the academic environment and higher education, preferably the liberal arts.
  • Experience with a customer relationship management (CRM) system is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to leverage social media platforms for marketing and/or recruiting purposes is preferred but not required.
  • Given increasingly diverse applicant pool, ability to communicate in other languages is preferred but not required.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Excellent communication (written, verbal and presentation) skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
  • Impeccable organizational (time, task, project management) skills and ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community.
  • Strong interpersonal skills (a sense of humor is a plus) with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships. Must be flexible, collaborative and have a positive attitude.
  • Genuine curiosity about the world, particularly higher education and issues of diversity and access.
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity and access and to serving the needs of a culturally and educationally diverse and inclusive community with diplomacy and compassion.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficiency in Zoom, Google Meet, and/or other video communication platforms.
  • Proficiency in various social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, SnapChat, TikTok
  • Ability and willingness to learn additional applications as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (by car, air, train or bus) domestically for four to six weeks, concentrated in the fall and spring (if/when possible), for recruitment events, professional conferences, and other programs.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings and other non-traditional schedules.
  • Personal commitment to excellence and the mission of a top-tier small liberal arts college.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
