Position Summary

The Director of Development and Donor Engagement serves as the primary fundraising executive for KTWU and, in that capacity, works closely with the General Manager to ensure the financial and budgetary obligations of the station are being met.

Essential Job Functions of Position

1. As primary fundraising executive for KTWU, works closely with the General Manager and station departments, applying knowledge of FCC CPB, PBS and IRS rules relative to fundraising activities.
Work closely with the KTWU General Manager to ensure that the station’s financial and budgetary obligations are met, recommending and assisting in developing revenue budgets for the station.

2. Plans and directs the implementation of KTWU fundraising campaigns, member events, community events and activities, incorporating new technologies, community partnerships and strategic alliances with businesses, organizations, other media organizations, etc.; working in consultation with the General Manager and involving the department and KTWU team members throughout the process to ensure successful implementation of all activities and optimal support of KTWU goals. Oversees donor engagement opportunities and ensures a nurturing and responsive environment for all KTWU donors. Manages volunteer involvement and engagement within all departments of KTWU .

3. Directs, supervises and evaluates the performance of the development team. Monitor events and activities such as on-air fundraising, viewer membership drives, annual fundraising events like the KTWU golf tournament and Women on Wheels car show, annual giving campaigns, major giving, corporate gifts and underwriting, and offer recommendations and guidance to staff as necessary or consulted to ensure successful completion of activities and professional performance. Secure financial, human and technical resources to support events and activities. Screen, interview and recommend hire as vacancies occur. Provide team-building, guidance and mentorship as necessary to improve and enhance the performance of the Development team.

Recruits, hires, trains, schedules and evaluates the performance and effectiveness of assigned staff to maximize employee performance and facilitate professional growth. Provides feedback and professional development opportunities. As the team leader and motivator, maintains a healthy, fair, and inclusive work environment by promoting diversity and exercising teamwork and collaboration. Actively promotes a professional workplace culture of mutual respect and collegiality for all members of the institution. Works to build positive and cooperative relationships with staff, encouraging them to work toward individual and departmental goals. Encourages the pursuit of professional development opportunities among staff to enrich employee performance and job satisfaction and bring new ideas and technologies to KTWU .

4. As a liaison with the Public Broadcasting Service, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, Washburn Endowment Association and other community organizations, foundations and funding sources, coordinate the logistics of receiving and transferring funds received through gifts and grants. Serves as a spokesperson for the station, serves as on-air talent, speaks to civic groups at conferences and committees, interacts with the public on behalf of KTWU and the General Manager, and assists in the station’s public relations effort. Accepts items for auction, pledges, payments for such things as auction items, underwriting, and pledges; and otherwise assists and supports other departments and staff during special events, unavailability of other staff, etc., to ensure the station’s success in all endeavors.

5. The Director of Development and Donor Engagement will establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with KTWU’s community partners and KTWU’s licensee, Washburn University, seeking out new and innovative fundraising initiatives and opportunities for community and donor engagement.
