Summary :

The University of Houston Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine is recruiting for an Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, to join the leadership team of Founding Dean Stephen J. Spann, M.D., M.B.A. The curriculum of this community-based medical school has a strong focus on primary care; behavioral, community and population health; high value healthcare; social determinants of health and health disparities; and partnering with communities with major health disparities to improve health and healthcare; and is taught utilizing best practices in medical education. The first class of students was admitted in July, 2020.

As a member of the College of Medicine leadership team, the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs will be responsible for the overall development and operation of the institution’s clinical services as they relate to the school’s mission in education, research, and community engagement. In addition to an administrative assignment, the successful candidate will also provide clinical care 20% of the time.

The Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs functions as an at-will employee under the general supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine and works in cooperation with other College of Medicine leadership and the appropriate university offices and within existing university policies, procedures, and practices.

Specific duties include the following:

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Develops the vision and operationalizes the clinical practice(s) of the UH Fertitta Family College of Medicine, designed to meet the educational needs of the institution, and the health needs of the communities served.
  • Develops and maintains external clinical partnerships.
  • Provides physician leadership to the medical school’s outpatient clinical practice at multiple locations.
  • Develops a collaborative relationship with managed care plans and maintains positive provider/payor relations.
  • Collaborates with Office of Medical Education and Chair of the Department of Clinical Sciences to include creation of a positive and effective learning and patient care environment.
  • Administers, manages, and evaluates all clinical and service activities.
  • Manages preparation and implementation of clinical budgets and maintains accountability for clinical expenditures.
  • Evaluates and recommends allocation and use of space and equipment for all clinical programs.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of the College of Medicine strategic plan, as it relates to the clinical enterprise.
  • Monitors student and trainee clinical opportunities in collaboration with Department Chairs and the Associate Dean, Office of Medical Education.
  • Oversees pipeline programs from GME to affiliated hospitals, in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education and Faculty Affairs.
  • Anticipates and responds to changes in accreditation requirements and changes in medical education as they relate to clinical training.
  • Develops, maintains and amends appropriate clinical policies.
  • Adheres to internal controls established for office and department.
  • 20% of effort will be dedicated to clinical practice.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Salary and rank commensurate with academic achievements and experience.

Full-Time: 1.0 FTE

Qualifications :

Minimum Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree (M.D. or D.O.)
  • Current medical board certification and license or eligibility for a license to practice medicine in Texas
  • Minimum of five years of leadership experience in an accredited medical school, health system, or FQHC
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a complex environment
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple and diverse stakeholders
  • Commitment to diversity
  • Track record of developing innovative clinical programs to support UME and GME training, with a focus on community health
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in business or public health
  • Academic credentials meriting a faculty appointment at Associate Professor or higher
  • Experience with clinical affairs
  • Experience with clinical leadership in an FQHC environment
  • Experience with LCME accreditation standards
  • Financial and operational acumen
  • Appreciation for the importance of community-based healthcare
  • Ability to strategically collaborate with partners maintaining various missions
