Facilities Services invites applications for a Facilities Associate to join their team. This position performs work of lower level position and, under general supervision, provides direct customer service to members of the campus and to the community at large. Builds and maintains a work atmosphere of trust and respect by establishing open communication among team members; recognizing the value of individual differences at all levels of the organization; taking steps to prevent destructive conflict and handling conflict in an appropriate manner; listening and responding appropriately to the needs, feelings and capabilities of all individuals; and providing support and assistance to team members.

This position also performs intermediate to advanced custodial duties, including specialty cleaning as it pertains to the work unit or area and seasonal cleaning work. Learns and understands the unique aspects and have mastered the specific custodial needs of the work area. Informs supervisor of observed problems and handles the more routine reports or requests repairs to facility. Reports equipment maintenance needs to supervisor.

The Facilities Associate position:
  • Acts professionally at all times

  • Has a thorough knowledge of their building assignment(s)
  • Provides quality customer service to the building staff, faculty, students, and the general public
  • Establishes positive communication with co-workers, staff, faculty, students, and the general public
  • Participates in regular meetings and safety trainings
  • Ensures work is performed in a safe manner
  • Ensures proper use and maintenance of custodial equipment
  • Has knowledge of green cleaning methods and the environmental impact of cleaning
  • Report building irregularities to Technician
  • Understand key protocols and building security
Custodial Duties:
  • Clean and sanitize restroom surfaces and fixtures
  • Collect trash
  • Stock University paper and soap dispensers
  • Vacuum carpeted areas
  • Sweep and mop floors including stairs
  • Sanitize high touch surfaces
  • Damp dust horizontal surfaces
  • Change University lights
  • Clean chalkboards and whiteboards in teaching areas
  • Replace dry erase markers, chalk, and erasers as needed
  • Clean classroom tabletops
  • Spot clean walls as needed
  • Clean public garbage cans as needed
  • Clean carpet stains as needed
  • Clean entryways including glass (weather permitting)
  • Sweep outside entryways (weather permitting)
  • Remove snow/ice from building entryways when needed
  • Clean drinking fountains, sinks, and elevators
  • Clean classroom furniture
  • Clean ceiling vents
  • Remove gum as needed
  • Accessible University carpets extracted as needed
  • Accessible University interior public glass cleaned as needed
  • Accessible hard floors cleaned, polished or refinished as needed
  • Reachable University light fixtures cleaned as needed
  • Any additional cleaning duties assigned by Technician
Required Skills
  • Knowledge and skill equivalent to a high school education.
  • One year directly related cleaning experience, or a combination of experience and education.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain a safe work environment
  • Work effectively in a team environment
  • Create and maintain a work atmosphere of trust and respect with all team members

Physical Requirements

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)
  • Lifting: Floor to 30 inches, up to 50 Lbs. Floor to 60 inches, up to 35 Lbs. Floor to overhead, up to 5# sustained, with both hands. (Lifting buffer, Floor to 30”, 70 Lbs optional.)
  • Carrying: 2 handed front carry up to 35 Lbs for 50 feet. (Carrying buffer up stairs, 70 Lbs optional.)
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (during the use of cleaning equipment 25 Lbs, handling janitor’s cart 5 Lbs).
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (handling, pushing and pulling classroom and office furniture, file cabinets, and equipment): 30 Lbs sustained at waist level (60 Lbs optional)
  • Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Reaching with your arms in all directions, including overhead with 5 Lbs in both hands, sustained.
  • Working overhead from various positions (standing, squatting, and kneeling).
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a ladder.
  • Use of various hand grip circumferences and firm hand grip positions while manipulating various tools and equipment (maximum 50 Lbs).
Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment .

Minimum Required Experience
  • High school diploma (or equivalency) in addition to one (1) year of related experience; or any combination of experience and education
About the Facilities Services and UM



The Mission of Facilities Services is to assist in the development of a physical environment supportive of teaching, research, and Administration on The University of Montana campus through the operation and maintenance of the state-funded Physical Plant, and providing services to the auxiliaries as required. It is also Facilities Services Mission to provide planning and construction services for all of the campuses in support of the development and enhancement of the University's Physical Plant. Additionally, Facilities Services is responsible for assuring compliance with all codes related to facilities, construction, renovations, maintenance and operations of all campus facilities. This Mission of support includes long-term preservation of facilities, assets, and equipment.

Position Details

Position Title: Facilities Associate

Position Number: 116500, NEW

Department: Facilities Services

Work Schedule: Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week), Monday through Friday 3:30 PM to 12:00 AM (midnight), 12 months/year.

Salary: $14.408/hrCurrent employee’s rate of pay for this position will be determined by the staff compensation plan and may be different from the posted salary. For questions and details regarding the staff compensation plan, email the Compensation Department .

Union Affiliation: Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE)

Probationary Period: Six months minimum
