Summary of Job Duties:Responsible for developing and managing emergency, compliance and training programs. Programs will be developed in compliance with state and federal regulations regarding hazardous materials, occupational safety, emergencies and emergency management, fire safety, and other related programs. Deficiencies will be analyzed to avoid injuries, health impairment, and environmental impact. The position reports to the Plant Operations Director.

Qualifications:

Required Education and/or Work Experience: Minimum qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in Environmental/Occupational Safety, Science disciplines, Emergency Management, or related area; three years of experience and training in the areas of health, occupational and environmental safety, and workplace safety. Other related education/and or experience may be substituted.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience: One or more years of experience working in higher education. One or more years of experience with within facilities management. Training and experience working with hazardous materials, OSHA regulations, CDL, budgets, and other trainings.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage campus-wide safety concerns, including:
    • Review and develop, as necessary, short- and long-term safety goals for the University
    • Implement policy, strategies and safety training programs ranging from environmental safety, work safety and emergency response safety
    • Campus-wide safety inspections
    • Effectively manage the hazardous/toxic material program for the University
  • Coordinate with staff and students, including:
    • Organize and deliver educational training to students, staff and faculty concerning emergency planning and response, environmental safety and workplace health and safety
    • Coordinate and develop emergency response and conduct safety drills to assess plan and desired outcomes
    • Chair the Campus Safety Committee
    • Effectively communicate with campus community and stakeholders with matters pertaining to health, safety, and compliance
  • Assure compliance with all federal, state, and local applicable code, regulations, and guidelines, including although not limited to ADA, NFPA, OSHA, etc.
  • Additional Plant Operations duties, to include a combination of:
    • Events/Moves management
    • State Surplus management
    • Sustainability
    • Project management (building construction and renovation)
    • Energy management
    • Elevators
    • Budget/finance
    • Any aspect of Plant Operations
  • Other duties as assigned
Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner to foster teamwork and by providing leadership to subordinates. Requires consistent on-time attendance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: To perform the job successfully, the following competencies are required for the essential functions of this position:
  • Knowledge and demonstrated understanding of OSHA safety regulations, fire prevention measures, Hazardous Materials regulations as to handling, storage and disposal.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal labor, environmental safety rules, regulations and principles of emergency management and University policy.
  • Computer database management skills, including the ability to work in a technological environment demonstrating proficiency in Microsoft Office, as well as Workday and other applications, i.e., training software.
  • Problem solving – Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, and to gather and analyze information skillfully.
  • Interpersonal skills – Ability to maintain confidential information with absolute discretion in all matters. Ability to remain open to other ideas and try new things.
  • Communication Skills – Ability to write and speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; professional group presentation skills; read and interpret written information. Ability to edit work for accuracy and thoroughness, and to monitor own work to ensure quality. Requires STRONG attention to detail.
  • Planning/Organizing – Ability to prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently; and develop realistic action plans.
  • Adaptability – Ability to adapt to changes in work environment, manage competing demands, and deal with frequent changes, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Dependability – Ability to arrive at work on time consistently; follow instructions; respond to management direction; and solicit feedback to improve performance.
  • Ability to develop process improvement with little guidance or supervision.
  • Ability to complete Hazardous Material, Manifest, Commercial Driver License, and other required training which may be required by law.
Additional Information:

Working Relationships: Will work with all members of the university community to include, students, faculty, staff, vendors, contractors and visitors. Frequent contact with all stakeholders and positive interactions seeking a best practice solution to the provision of Emergency Planning, Preparation and Response Services, and Health and Safety Coordination, to benefit UAFS.

List Employees Supervised: Three person events/moves team

Special Job Dimensions: Work performed in all conditions and locations, ranging from indoors to outdoors, from office setting to dirty, noisy, hazardous conditions. Working conditions will include routine walking, lifting, presentations of training materials and exposure to inclement weather. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on a computer screen. Employee regularly talks and hears. Regular working schedule of Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on weekends and evenings as needed. Must be readily available to act quickly and efficiently in emergency situations.
