Position Summary:

The undergraduate program team in the Department of Physiology seeks a full-time, continuing appointment Academic Specialist – Advising. Duties include advising undergraduate students majoring in Neuroscience. This individual will be responsible for working with students from their freshman year through graduation. This position will work collaboratively with the undergraduate program team to engage in proactive and holistic advising, offered through an equity lens, to support and empower students to reach their academic and career goals.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

 

Advising (85%)

  • Assist undergraduate students in course selection, while maintaining and monitoring student records towards degree completion. Support students by providing academic success strategies; creating connections with campus resources, research, and internship opportunities; encouraging growth in career development, including preparation for graduate school and health profession school.  Bridge connections between students and other members of the Department of Physiology and the broader MSU community. Represent the department while meeting with prospective students and parents; advising students during New Student Orientation programs; department-associated undergraduate clubs; undergraduate commencement; recruitment at College Colloquium, “Community, Curriculum, and Career” (C3) Expo, and other associated undergraduate events. (Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.) Approve and manage course overrides and academic program degree substitutions in collaboration with the undergraduate program director and education program coordinator.  Engage with faculty and academic staff in the department, the College of Natural Science Dean’s Office, Lyman Briggs College, the Honors College, and other units on campus. Collaborate with advising colleagues through college-wide advisor meetings and professional development activities to promote professional growth and to support the student’s academic success. Work collaboratively through an equity lens to ensure all students of the undergraduate program feel supported and respected in their student success.

 

Teaching (15%):

  • Collaborate with departmental advisors to develop the course content for a freshmen seminar course for students in the Neuroscience major Teach/assist in teaching the freshmen seminar course Participate in undergraduate curriculum review and program updates as a member of the department’s Undergraduate Program and Curriculum Committee.     Participate in professional development activities to continue improving the curriculum and enhance teaching skills

Required Degree

Masters

 

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree or higher in Science, Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related field. Evidence of successful collaborations in a professional or educational setting. Applicants should have excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Evidence of contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion in a professional or educational setting. 

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with college-aged STEM students. An understanding of undergraduate biological science curricula. Familiarity with student information systems and with university policies and procedures Proficiency in standard computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
