Description

The Department of Anthropology at Dartmouth College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin Fall 2023. We seek a scholar specializing in anthropological genetics whose research sits at the intersection of molecular anthropology, bioarchaeology, and critical engagement with post-colonial studies of Indigenous and other descendent communities. Applicants with an active program of field and lab-based research and expertise in molecular and genetic analytic techniques will be given priority. We welcome qualified candidates with any regional specialization, especially those who might bring new areas to our department.

Anthropology at Dartmouth is a vibrant intellectual community spanning the four subfields, with one of the strongest records of undergraduate teaching and mentoring in our discipline and boasting over 100 undergraduate majors and minors. This faculty member will contribute to the Anthropology Department’s core curriculum and will have opportunities to develop new courses reflecting their areas of specialization. The department is also part of a growing interdisciplinary PhD program, Ecology, Evolution, Environment and Society (EEES), through which we maintain a cohort of graduate students in relevant fields of anthropology. In addition, the department typically hosts several postdoctoral scholars funded by the Dartmouth Society of Fellows, the Neukom Institute, the McKennan Fund, and a variety of other institutional programs. Faculty and students in the Department of Anthropology have access to travel and research funding from numerous institutional sources, including the Department's Claire Garber Goodman Fund for Anthropological Research. Faculty in the department frequently collaborate with colleagues in the Giesel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, the Departments of Geography, Biological Sciences, and Classics, as well as with many of Dartmouth’s area and topical studies programs, including Environmental Studies; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Native American and Indigenous Studies; Middle East Studies; Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies; African and African American Studies; and Asian Societies, Cultures, and Languages.

Anthropology, and Dartmouth as a whole, are highly committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive population of students, faculty, and staff. We are especially interested in applicants who are able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds, including but not limited to: racial and ethnic minorities, women, individuals who identify with LGBTQ+ communities, individuals with disabilities, individuals from lower income backgrounds, and/or first generation college graduates.

Qualifications

Applicants should have a PhD in Anthropology or a closely related field, or be ABD with PhD expected before the start date.

Application Instructions

Applicants should submit the following electronically via Interfolio:

1) Curriculum vitae;

2) Cover letter detailing: (1) current and future research plans, (2) teaching experience and philosophy, and (3) how their teaching, research, service, and/or life experiences prepare them to advance Dartmouth’s commitments to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Review of applications will begin September 18, 2022 and continue until the position has been filled. Additional materials, including letters of recommendation, will be requested of semi-finalists at a later date.
