The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is hiring a Director OR Executive Director of Technology for the School of Law. The position will be filled based on selected candidate's qualifications. This position is responsible for leading and managing the implementation and support of information technology initiatives that address dynamic law school and campus-wide technology service needs.  
The Director informs and advises upper-level senior professionals during the implementation of strategic and tactical goals and initiatives and works collaboratively with IT professionals in the Law School, in the Center for Information Technology Services, and in other UMB schools to ensure the successful implementation and support of these initiatives.  The Director must be able to understand highly complex issues and how to address them, and as appropriate, present them to upper management for decision-making (e.g., effective resource allocation, managing security risks).  This position contributes meaningfully to the development and implementation of the mission, goals, and broad policy directions for information technology and personnel (e.g., assessment, communication, professional development, budget).
  This position is responsible for overseeing the information technology and the media services teams.  Both teams provide critical support and services to the law school community including all frontline equipment, application maintenance, and support.  This position reports to the Associate Dean of Library and Technology at the law school as well as UMB’s Senior Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and management of the law school’s information technology and media services teams.  Develops and oversees procedures for monitoring staff performance by working with them to create goals and objectives, conducting long term planning, and monitoring overall coverage.  Encourages professional development within the team. Mentors individual staff as needed to enhance their skill set. Proactively represents the School and departments through participation in campus meetings and special projects. Works closely with colleagues in the Center of Information Technology Services (CITS) as well as IT professionals in other schools at UMB to implement technology systems and services for the law school (e.g., supporting existing systems and planning, developing, designing, and implementing new systems). Ensures information security and compliance standards are met within the law school, with special attention to programs that manage potentially sensitive data (e.g., clinical law program).  In coordination with relevant staff (e.g., department head, administrative coordinator), responsible for overseeing vendor relations (e.g., hardware and software procurement, installation, and management). Responsible for meeting time, budget and performance goals. Facilitates collaboration among Academic Technology, Media Services, and IT departments.   Ability to facilitate the integration of a variety of technologies across a diverse community to support complex instructional and classroom technology needs. Ability to support and coordinate with departments in the acquisition and integration of new technologies. Demonstrated commitment to coach, develop, supervise, and partner with direct and indirect reports. Develops solutions within the context of technology applications and equipment to meet the evolving needs of the Carey Law community.  Directs the development, testing, and execution of the “disaster recovery” plan to ensure continued law school operations.

 

Minimum Qualifications for Director:

  • Education: Bachelor’s in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Seven (7) years spent progressively building a background in technology project management, preferably on large scale projects with at least three (3) years of experience with project management duties. Supervisory Experience: Three (3) years of experience directly supervising diverse teams in a demanding environment. Certification/Licensure: Project management program (PMP) certificate preferred.
     

 Minimum Qualifications for Executive Director:

  • Education: Bachelor’s in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: Eight (8) years spent progressively building a background in technology project management, preferably on large scale projects with at least three (3) years of experience with project management duties. Supervisory Experience: Four (4) years of experience directly supervising diverse teams in a demanding environment. Certification/Licensure: Project management program (PMP) certificate preferred.

  Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with Microsoft technologies (e.g., Azure infrastructure and Virtual Desktop). Experience managing IT security, computer and network technologies, software applications, and IT support services. Experience with audio visual and multimedia production. Knowledge of lecture capture, web conferencing, audio signal processing (e.g., Bi-Amp, QSC) and control system technology software (e.g., Crestron).

  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of position requirements. Thorough knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws. Strategic and analytical thinking skills with the ability to solve problems and make decisions in a rapidly evolving and unpredictable environment. Skill in effective use of applicable technology and systems. Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Ability to manage expectations consistently using sound judgment, diplomacy, and patience. Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting and developing partnerships with key stakeholders and individuals.  Model pleasant and positive interactions with staff and faculty alike to meet customer expectations.  Ability to work effectively and creatively with an active, diverse, research-oriented faculty, student body, and staff. Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with members and affiliates of the law school and UMB communities. Instructional, training, and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships. Skill in consultation and change management. Hiring Range: Commensurate with education and experience. ($135K - $149K Director/  $158K - $170K Exec. Director)
