San Francisco State University, Department of Public Health offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Racism, Racial Justice and Critical Public Health beginning August 9, 2023. We seek a colleague whose teaching and research interests include understanding how racism is embedded across systems and levels of influence and how anti-racist and healing justice practices and policies can contribute to liberation and health equity. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment -- through their research, teaching, and service -- to the diversity and excellence of our academic community. 

The mission of the Department of Public Health at San Francisco State University is to promote health and health equity at individual, community, and structural levels through transformative education, research, scholarship and service, all of which value diversity, engage communities and are grounded in cultural humility. We offer a Master in Public Health (MPH) degree as well as a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Public Health, both currently accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health [CEPH]. Responsibilities: The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in the Department of Public Health, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing scholarship in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Public Health (Ph.D. or Dr.PH.), or, doctoral degree in closely related field with an M.P.H. degree. Terminal degree must be completed by first day of employment
  • Record of collegial, supportive and collaborative work relationships with faculty, staff, and students
  • A record of excellence in teaching
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching and scholarship
  • Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically underrepresented communities

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated ability to teach in at least two or more of the following areas of: epidemiology, determinants of health, biostatistics, research methods, courses addressing topics related to racism, racial justice and critical public health Active record of community-engaged research and scholarship that addresses racism, racial justice and critical public health Evidence of or the potential for external funding of these activities Ability to work collaboratively in a faculty learning community to support socially relevant, engaged curriculum and pedagogies Record of contributing to supportive and collaborative work environments

Rank and salary:  Assistant Professor. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
