TThe University Library of Governors State University is inviting applicants for the newly created position of Department Chair of the University Library at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The position is a 12-month appointment and reports to the Dean of the University Library.

The chair, working with the dean, is responsible for faculty and staff evaluations, collaborative work with the other academic units and assists the dean in overseeing a $2 million budget. The chair will oversee the librarians, including the head of Technical and Public services. The chair will also work with the dean in planning for the future, revitalizing and modernizing the informational holdings (both physical and digital) and work on planning as needed for the proposed new library building.
Additionally, the Department Chair will work with the Dean on the hiring and evaluation processes for tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty; resolving conflicts informally and formally; resolving student concerns; and representing the Library and Dean’s Office internally and externally. The Department Chair has the primary responsibility for providing curricular and instructional leadership and for coordinating the academic resources of the library and expanding the scholarship and funding opportunities.

A new library building is currently the number one priority in the recently approved facilities Master Plan for the University. In the meantime the successful candidate will assist in our plans to develop a separate library spaces for the College of Business, College of Education, and College of Health and Human Services within the current physical layout of the library.

  • Masters of Library and Information Science from an ALA Accredited Program.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or related field, ABD will be considered; or an MA or MBA in a business related field.
  • Record of scholarship (writing and grants).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent inter-personal and collaborative skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are bilingual with both speaking, reading-writing skills.
  • Experience with budgets.
  • Demonstrated success in personnel management of faculty and staff in a highly regulated environment.
  • Working knowledge of OER .
