The University of Florida (UF) is accepting applications for an academic advisor position in the School of Music. This dynamic position has the unique opportunity to help students successfully navigate their entire undergraduate experience, from prospective student inquiries all the way through graduation and beyond. Applicants should have an understanding of college student development and demonstrate the skills needed to support and advise students, and should model the core values established by the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) for an Academic Advisor. Applicants should be detail-oriented with a strong ability to prioritize and multi-task in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; have effective interpersonal skills and experience working with diverse populations; be able to work autonomously as well as within a team; and have an appreciation for music. This position will work alongside the current academic advisor to carry out the diverse portfolio of responsibilities of the School of Music (SOM) advising office. Those responsibilities include:

Advising undergraduate students in the SOM on academic requirements and policies
  • Advise music students with questions and/or concerns for academic policies and practices
  • Advise music PaCE students
  • Serve as a liaison/mediator between the faculty and the students
  • Work collaboratively with the offices of the University Registrar, Admissions, International Center, Career Resource Center, and Counseling Center
  • Maintain electronic files on each UG student in the Student Services Office
  • Monitor all music majors (approximately 240-260) and scholarship recipients at the end and beginning of each semester for eligibility criteria and progress towards their major
  • Monitor progress of at risk students and students in academic trouble
  • Advise, readmit, and develop program plan for appropriate students seeking readmission to the SOM
  • Review degree audits for students and make necessary adjustments and/or corrections regarding substituted courses, requirement waivers, courses included in grade point average, and catalog year. In addition, make the necessary changes when there are curricular changes to the degree programs.
  • Work with faculty on curricular changes and submission of changes through the approval system.
  • Serve on campus wide committees such as UAC, Student Conduct, Senate Petitions.
Working with UF’s summer orientation programs for freshmen and new transfer students
  • Assist with new student programs, Preview and Transfer Student Orientation throughout the year
Assist with students seeking admission to School of Music
  • Meet with prospective students and parents
  • Organize audition days (Four times each academic year)
  • Process transient, non-degree, audit forms including those from Santa Fe College who are seeking participation in SOM ensembles
  • Represent the SOM [and, at times, other units within the College of the Arts (COTA)] at numerous recruitment functions, which may require some travel and event coordination
    • Recruitment events include but are not limited to:
      • Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) Convention
        • Help organize FMEA Convention Both
        • Help organize Annual Alumni Reception during FMEA
      • Gator Days at Santa Fe Community College
      • UF Admissions Office sponsored functions
      • Some Florida high school visits
  • General assisting on school initiatives, time permitting and according to the candidate’s skillset
Location and Schedule: Normal working hours are Monday through Friday 8am-5pm; some after-hours and weekend activities occur, including SOM Audition Days, and SOM representation at conferences and college fairs. Other than these occasional off-campus assignments, this individual is expected to perform their duties on the UF main campus in Gainesville, Florida.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC: Organized within the College of the Arts, the School of Music plays an important role in the academic and cultural life of the University, the College’s Creative Campus initiative and the community. The School has 40 full-time and nine adjunct faculty, serving some 200 graduate and 200 undergraduate music majors. Degree programs include B.A., B.M., M.M., D.M.A., and the Ph.D. in music education, composition, ethnomusicology, and historical musicology. Program emphases include performance, music education, theory, composition, music history and literature, ethnomusicology, conducting, and sacred music. The School of Music is also home to the UF Bands program, which includes “The Pride of the Sunshine” Gator Marching Band. School of Music facilities include the School of Music Building and Steinbrenner Band Hall, among others. Expected Salary:

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, counseling, or related fields
