Job Description:

The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking to appoint an academically motivated Assistant Professor within 5 years of completion of residency/fellowship to pursue research in the area of sepsis and resuscitation science at the accruing level of tenured or non-tenured. Located in sunny, Jacksonville, Florida, the Department of Emergency Medicine at UF Health Jacksonville is one of the most well-established Emergency Medicine programs in the country.

The successful candidate will work with our team of independently-funded investigators including the UF KL2 Co-director and the Director of the Center for Research Training. The appointed faculty member will be immersed in a supportive team environment, receive dedicated mentorship, as well as substantial allocated research time and support to pursue an independently funded research career. The faculty member will also have access to the Research Training Academy via the Center for Research Training which includes focused education in grant writing and study design.

The Division of Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine houses a robust funding portfolio including active NIH R01 and K grants, industry, and foundation funding. The Division has robust resources to support clinical research including a clinical research manager, seven research coordinators, a research administration manager, biological scientist and research laboratory, and administrative support. Our EM faculty have been recipients of one R01, three K23s, and three KL2s in the past 5 years. Established in 1975, the Department of Emergency Medicine is also home to one of the oldest Emergency Medicine Residencies in the country, training 15 emergency medicine residents per class in the top-rated emergency medicine training program in Florida.

Clinical work covers two main hospitals and several community based sites. These offer a diverse patient population and wide range of pathologies and ideal settings for both clinical practice and research with combined ED visits of over 130,000 patients per year. Our academic flagship hospital, UF Health Jacksonville, is an ACS verified Level 1 trauma center as well as Stroke and Chest Pain receiving center.

The University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville is the largest of the three colleges at the Health Science Center Jacksonville. The college is affiliated with UF Health in Jacksonville, a health system comprised of two hospitals — the 603-bed UF Health Jacksonville and 92-bed UF Health North — and more than 60 primary and specialty care practices throughout Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

The college's 16 clinical science departments house more than 440 faculty members, 1,560 staff and 384 residents and fellows, as well as medical students from UF and around the country. We offer an incredible breadth of clinical training programs, training the best primary care providers and specialists throughout the region, the state and the country.

The college offers 38 accredited graduate medical education programs and 14 non-standard programs. More than 100 residents and fellows from programs across the U.S. come to UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville to participate in various clinical rotations as well.

In addition to graduate medical education, clinical rotations in all the major disciplines are provided for students from the UF College of Medicine in Gainesville. Third-year medical students enrolled at UF spend about 25 percent of their training at the Jacksonville campus, gaining valuable experience in an urban setting. While third-year rotations are only offered to UF students, elective rotations in the final year of clinical training are available to students from accredited schools in the US and Canada.

For practicing physicians, the college offers a continuing medical education program that recruits national and international speakers who are well known and respected in their fields.

The college's faculty, residents and fellows are active in clinical research. Residents and fellows regularly present their findings at locations across the country and publish their projects in well-known publications. In 2021, the campus received $30 million in external research funding, approximately 50% of which was federally sponsored projects.

The campus houses a 16,000-square-foot biomedical research facility housing laboratory space for translational research. To support faculty and resident research, the college has a Center for Data Solutions, offering researchers analytics, epidemiology and biostatistics support, and a Center for Research Training, helping develop the next generation of highly collaborative clinical researchers.

Located in the Northeastern part of the state on the Atlantic Ocean, Jacksonville’s weather is sunny and pleasant. We enjoy an average of 320 days of sunshine each year, yet have the coolest summers in the state. Known as the River City, Jacksonville is a major port city with numerous waterways, two Naval bases, several nature preserves, marshes, lakes, wetlands and miles of beaches. Flowing through Jacksonville is the 310-mile St. Johns River, which plays a major role in our work and play.

Expected Salary:

Salary is negotiable with excellent benefit package, based on experience.

Minimum Requirements:

MD/DO and BE/BC. Successful candidate should be within 5 years of completion of residency/fellowship to pursue research in the area of sepsis and resuscitation science.
