Vice Provost - Global Impact

JOB SUMMARY
Impact Engines are conceptualized to galvanize and organize interdisciplinary learning, research, and partnerships around solving a challenge or set of challenges, with the goal of maximum impact. Impact Engines span disciplines, colleges, campuses, and industry sectors, connecting diverse communities of problem-solvers around creating measurable change. They are a key pillar of the university's new academic plan, and a means for Northeastern to claim leadership as an institution with broad Global Impact and report to The Office of the Provost. The provost guides the university in implementing the academic plan, with a special responsibility for integrating academic planning across the colleges and fostering cross-college interdisciplinary initiatives within the goals of the plan.
Reporting to the Deputy Provost, the Vice Provost, Global Impact will be responsible for managing the pipeline of Impact Engines at various stages of review, approval, and implementation. The Vice Provost will review all Impact Engine submissions, work with the submitting faculty member(s) and the Sr. Vice Provost for Strategic Initiatives and the Vice Provost for Research Development (IE support team) on refinement, share the proposal(s) with deans and other internal stakeholders for feedback, ensure that each proposal goes through a thorough technical review process, and prepare the Provost and others to present the Impact Engine proposal to senior leadership for approval. If approved, the Vice Provost will work with the Impact Engine faculty member(s) and the IE support team to refine/develop milestones and KPIs and manage deliverables on an ongoing basis. The Vice Provost will be responsible for providing regular reports to senior leadership and other stakeholders on the status of all Impact Engines and serve as the liaison between the Impact Engines and various stakeholders.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven change management, consensus building, conflict
resolution.
- Excellent oral and written communication abilities with
particular emphasis on ability to understand, interpret, and
summarize initiatives across a variety of subject domains for
presentation to technical and non-technical audiences;
- Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects and
activities, and flexibility to manage addition or reprioritization
of projects and to request guidance as needed;
- Ability to assume a leading role in project and program
management and demonstrated expertise in managing the development
of complex documents;
- Strong interpersonal and organizations skills with a
demonstrated ability to build consensus in order to achieve desired
outcomes across diverse stakeholder groups;
- Experience in academic research, business development,
strategic planning, data design and analysis, and technical
writing, a plus;
- Flexible, creative, results-driven professional and team player
with ability to add value to the development of Impact Engine
proposals and implementation documentation across a variety of
subject domains.
- Knowledge and skills required for this position are normally
acquired through a Ph.D. degree - but experience in the field can
also be taken into consideration and at least 12 years of
experience in product development, product implementation, Global
Impact or another relevant area with an emphasis on
multi-stakeholder initiatives and proposal development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Develop & implement repeatable processes with the goal of
driving efficiency and streamline processes.
- Lead and manage implementation of new business end-to-end after
approval.
- Maintaining communication throughout the course of the project
to meet stakeholder expectations.
- Plan, lead, organize and control multiple project initiatives
in accordance with approved milestones and KPI's.
- Provide day-to-day direction to cross-functional implementation
support teams.
- Work closely with Len Polizzotto, Ph.D., Executive in Residence
for Innovation at Northeastern University, former Vice President at
Draper Labs and Curtis Carlson, Ph.D., Professor of Practice at
Northeastern University, Former President and CEO at SRI
International
- Interact directly with various stakeholder representatives,
ranging from senior leadership to faculty, administrative staff,
and external partners. Collaborate with Impact Engine Lead PI's, IE
support team, and Senior leadership to ensure all processes are
adhered to throughout the implementation process. Work closely with
internal stakeholders to identify potential issues and risks.
- Work with the Vice Provost for Finance &
Administration/team on creating and refining the Impact Engine
budgets.
- Work with University Decision support on developing dashboards
and KPIs for each Impact Engine to track performance against clear
and measurable benchmarks, goals and success metrics.
- Work with the Provost Office Director of Internal
Communications/team on developing a communication strategy for
Impact Engines and executing the communication strategic
plan.
- Work with the Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Space
Planning on identifying space needs and then locating appropriate
space(s).
- Create documentation that enables the transition from proposal
to approval to implementation.
- Assess and adapt to strategic priorities and changes,
recommending changes or improvements within the Impact Engine
Implementation Process as necessary.
- Supports Quality Driven Management techniques within the
business, encouraging use of analysis to drive decision making and
development of improvements.
- Ensures team understands expectations and how information is
reported and used.
- Responsible for portfolio reporting, including updates to the
provost and other senior management, as well as quarterly portfolio
review processes.
