Job Summary

The Visual Communications Designer works under the general direction of the Senior Director of Creative Strategy. The incumbent performs assignments related to the design of multiplatform communications (e.g. print and time-based design solutions) that promote the university; prepares layouts and coordinates production, creation or display of print and multimedia materials; and organizes short- and long-term projects in collaboration with the creative team. This position is focused on time-based presentation and motion skills but will have a wide variety of projects within the university environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plans and develops design concepts by studying information and materials; designs layout of art and copy; obtains approval of concept by submitting draft layouts; prepares final layout
  • Participates in selecting the visual materials to be used in the communication of information
  • Creates visual material, including charts, graphs and diagrams, or motion as needed for presentations, videos or events
  • Participates in the selection of typographical formats. Develops and applies style sheets
  • Assists with campus visual resource creation for digital asset libraries
  • Recommends improvements to creative process, including workflow and file management
  • Consults with clients, as needed and/or as assigned, to understand their communications goals and ensure that design concepts are appropriate and tailored to the intended audience, and within current visual brand standards
  • Controls testing of presentation or time-based output to ensure functionality for client
  • Assists with the development, writing and presentation of design and production standards
  • Assists with print or environmental specifications for cost estimates and quotes
  • Art-direct students and professional designers and photographers as needed
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to set own priorities, perform consistently, organize and plan work and projects; make timely decisions independently; complete projects accurately with little or no supervision
  • Working knowledge of marketing principles and practices as they relate to print and multimedia communications; ability to use them effectively to create visual materials
  • Working knowledge of the principles of print/media design, typography, color, layout and production techniques
  • Knowledge of the use of color, tone, shading and harmony
  • Proven ability to create complementary print and online materials
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, including AfterEffects skills, and presentation design programs such as (PowerPoint or Prezi)
  • Strong consultative and persuasive skills in presenting branding and design concepts to clients and partners.
  • Strong art direction, and creative project planning, project management skills
  • Ability to brainstorm and collaborate with other creative professionals, including other creative team members; offer and accept constructive criticism; and adapt creative concepts in response to changing demands and circumstances
  • Ability to conceptualize and execute integrated print and web elements of hybrid projects
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Advanced skill exercising initiative and using good judgment to make sound decisions
  • Advanced skill exercising professionalism, composure under pressure, and flexibility
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent, in graphic design, fine arts, or a related field of study
  • Three years of full-time experience with graphic application and publishing tools
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts Design
  • Time-based (AI), presentation and video editing experience
  • Experience creating graphic resource or pattern library and its many applications and uses


Compensation

Classification: Graphic Designer III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,211/month - $6,250/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,104/month - $7,425/month
