Colleagues include national and international conference presenters, editors and peer reviewers, and peer-reviewed authors. Research in the CSRR focused on understanding complex brain systems crucial to spatial processing, attention, speech, and language; how these systems are affected by stroke; and how behavioral and physiological treatments can be designed and used to address these impairments, reduce deficits, and improve functional outcomes. Its two laboratories are as follows:

  • Spatial Attention, Awareness, and Ability Laboratory, led by Peii (Peggy) Chen, PhD
  • Neurolinguistics and Brain Connectivity Laboratory, led by Olga Boukrina, PhD

The Director of CSRR will have regular regular communications with senior management of Kessler Foundation including the SVP of Research/Training, and the President and CEO. The Director will also interact with the Board of Trustees.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops state-of-the-art research proposals for submission to funding agencies (including federal agencies such as NIH, NIDILRR, DoD, and NSF) with the expectation of obtaining intramural/extramural grant funding
  • Supervises and mentors CSRR staff members, predoctoral and postdoctoral research fellows, and visiting professors/scientists (if applicable); oversees development and completion of projects and publications by staff and students
  • Develops, monitors, and implements approved internal cost center budget and all external grant cost center budgets related to the CSRR
  • Develops effective collaborative research activities, both internally and externally, pertinent to relevant research interests and the missions of the Center and the Foundation
  • Adheres to all human subjects protection and the Foundation policies and maintains related files at the highest level of completeness and accuracy required by the IRB for the type of research.

The successful candidate will be recommended for a faculty appointment in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, and will have a close affiliation with Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation (KIR), and access to its patient population, and, if applicable, will maintain clinical privileges and responsibilities. KIR is one of the largest and most comprehensive medical rehabilitation hospitals in the US with 435 inpatient beds on their four New Jersey hospital campuses with approximately 2,000 stroke admissions annually, and is consistently ranked among the nation's top rehabilitation hospitals.
