CONTEXT OF THE JOB:

Under general supervision, installs, modifies, repairs and maintains standard data communication systems. The principal emphasis is on installing data communications system components such as network switches, wireless access points, UPS units, and structured cabling systems as well as configuring equipment which is usually combined and interrelated with other data communication equipment. Requires occasional independent judgment working within established procedures.

The Network Technician I reports to the Manager of the Network Installation Group.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Depending on divisional assignment, the following are typical examples of work:
  • Installs data communication equipment.
  • Configures and maintains soft-settings on data communication equipment.
  • Provides ongoing maintenance support on selected data communication systems.
  • Installs intra-building wiring systems.
  • Maintains adequate stock of maintenance and installation-related supplies following established procedures and stocking levels.
  • Maintains accurate installation and maintenance records.
  • Responds to Miss Utility of Delaware for UD owned telecommunications software.
  • Works within safety rules and regulation guidelines and quality control standards. Maintains safety codes. Ensures that work sites are properly marked for Miss Utility to protect the integrity of network infrastructures.
  • Develops a familiarity with the University's telecommunication infrastructure, basic building intra and inter cabling systems, and telecomm room configuration.
  • Maintains and increases level of technical skill and broad awareness of technical developments within the areas of local and wide area networks, wireless technology, fiber optic transmission systems, data transmission standards, and inter/intra building wiring standards. Keeps abreast of industry standards, recommendations, guidelines, and codes.
  • Works on call after hours on a rotating schedule throughout the year.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Requires a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with specialized training in electronics and one year's hands-on experience. Associate's degree with two years' data communication and communications software experience preferred.
  • Good understanding of the principles of both analog and digital electronics and their application to the complexity of data communication components and transmission facilities.
  • Technical aptitude, fine attention to detail, and ability to interpret specifications and schematics.
  • Knowledge of the operation, capabilities and limitations of standard and more specialized data communications equipment.
  • Knowledge of communication software, CAD and excel.
  • Ability to work independently and interact well with diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people having various levels of technical expertise and interact well with people of all ages and diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of standard trade practices, and safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of local, state and national codes that govern the installation of communication systems preferred.


ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS/OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURES:
  • Work is typically performed inside and possibly in dusty and dirty areas.
  • Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Work in confined spaces is performed when required.
  • The Network Group is responsible for outside plant telecommunications infrastructure which requires work performed in adverse conditions in outdoor environments.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work requires frequent bending, pulling cables and wires, using hand and power tools and working in awkward positions.
  • Technician stands and walks for extended periods and occasionally climbs and works from ladders.
  • May require occasional off-hour work, overtime or regularly scheduled on-call status.
  • Possession of valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Must be able to work at heights, off of a ladder and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to lift and move, with or without assistance, equipment weighing 75 pounds
  • Must be able to see and distinguish different colors, read small print and hear and recognize audible signals such as dial tones.
