Duties and Responsibilities

1. The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Library seeks an innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented librarian to join a team of library and information professionals. Under the general direction of the Asia Collection Department Chair, the Japanese Studies Librarian will work collaboratively to lead in collection development and management of all materials in all formats related to Japanese studies, provide research assistance, and library instruction. In addition, the librarian will liaise with the Center for Japanese Studies to initiate national and international resource sharing collaborations, international symposia, rare materials preservation, restoration and digitization, web site development, and fundraising and outreach with the Japanese communities. 

2. Provide professional reference service (in-person and virtual) to faculty, students, and the general public.

3. Provide in-depth personal consultation to researchers and students.

4. Work collegially with the other area studies librarians in the Asia Collection, actively engage in departmental affairs, and participate in library-wide activities.

5. Offer specialized bibliographic instruction to students in Asian Studies, and Japanese Studies, and participate with others in meeting the broader instruction needs of the library in a variety of modalities (i.e. face-to-face, virtual, online, etc.) to promote strong critical thinking skills.

6. Work in cooperation with other Asia Collection librarians and the teaching faculty to develop tailored instruction programs and prepare specialized bibliographic guides in print and online to aid in instruction.

7. Collection development including and not limited to examining newly published material in all formats related to Japan in humanities and social science subject areas and deciding which publication to purchase or make available for the library. Knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the collection and teaching and research interests at the University of Hawai‘i are essential to performing this task.

8. Provide consultation and assistance to technical services with processing materials from and about Japan.

9. Work with Japanese publishers and maintain knowledge about Japanese and publishing trends.

10. Work collaboratively with the Okinawan Studies Librarian on projects and collections that overlap and intersect.

11. When the Okinawan Studies Librarian is absent or the position is unfilled, oversee the Okinawan Studies collection, liaise with the Center for Okinawan Studies, and provide research support to Okinawan Studies students, faculty, and scholars.

12. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, donors, and the general community.

13. Participate at the national and international level with other area specialists and in consortia.

14. Keep abreast of recent developments in information technology.

15. Should be competent in web page development and maintenance, and knowledgeable about digitization and its application in libraries.

16. Maintain a productive attitude and enthusiasm for an innovative and changing environment.

17. Librarians have faculty status and must meet requirements for tenure and promotion including professional development, research, and service.


Librarian II Minimum Qualifications

1. ALA accredited MLS or equivalent.

2. Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills in Japanese and English.


Desirable Qualifications

1. A working knowledge of the Okinawan/Ryukyuan language or dialects.

2. Research experience and/or course work in a subject related to Japanese or Okinawan studies.

3. Demonstrated creativity in program or project development.

4. Demonstrated understanding of issues related to area-focused collections in an academic library.

5. Knowledge of publishing and book trade.

6. Knowledge in the provision of area studies reference; collection development and management; and instruction in an academic library.

7. Knowledge of issues and trends in information technology for academic libraries.

8. Knowledge of library acquisition and management, and technical processing.

9. Evidence of participation in international, national, or regional professional associations.

10. Understanding of preparing and managing budgets.

11. Demonstrated experience in creating or designing web pages and/or digital collections related to Asia, Area Studies, Japan or Okinawa.
