Position Information

This is a full-time, temporary position. ** Successful candidates in these temporary appointments may be appointed from a few days up to one year depending on the assignment. Temporary appointments must end on or before the end of the fiscal year (June 30th of the following year), with the possibility of renewal.

The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

The incumbent is required to live in a department-provided apartment and adapt to an on-campus lifestyle; the incumbent works a 40-hour work week with varied shifts and times, including some evenings, weekends, and non-traditional hours. The incumbent will participate in an after-hours on-call rotation with other professional staff and serve as essential campus emergency response personnel as required by the department and University. The incumbent must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff. The incumbent will be expected to spend extended amounts of time with large student groups. The incumbent may also need to climb stairs to access individual student rooms and facilities.

Please note that the living space provided to employee is furnished, and intended for the employee, and their immediate family, as applicable. Employee may not provide, lease, or otherwise allow this professional staff apartment to be used as a residence by any other individual(s) without advanced written approval from the Vice President of Student Affairs or designee. In the event employment with California State University Dominguez Hills ends, the individual will have fourteen (14) calendar days from the date of separation to vacate the living space. If additional time is needed, the individual may submit a request in writing, which can only be approved by the Vice President or designee.

Major Duties

The Residential Life Coordinator (RLC) is a member of the University Housing team. In collaboration with the Director, Associate Directors, other professional staff, and students, this position will carry out the mission, vision, and goals of the University Housing program. The Residential Life Coordinator helps to coordinate housing initiatives that foster curricular and co-curricular engagement for students living on campus and is responsible for supporting and contributing to an atmosphere that facilitates responsibility, maturity, inclusion, safety, and respect.

The RLC is a full-time, live-in position within the department. Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Residential Life and the direct leadership of the Senior Residence Life Coordinator, the RLC will assist in the development and implementation of a comprehensive campus living, learning community development plan and all aspects of the administrative coordination of a residence hall or apartment community. This position performs moderately complex student services professional work in that it requires the knowledge, skills, and ability to use judgment in applying the principles, techniques, standards, guides, and characteristics of a particular student service program or activity. The involvement with professional associations, university committees, events, and functions are structured within this role to support the development and growth of the incumbent.

Qualifications

Required Experience:
Two (2) years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job‑related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Required Education:
Graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a job‑related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Student Affairs, or related field.
  • Experience counseling and referral of diverse college student populations.
  • Experience supervising a diverse college‐aged student staff or group/club.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or previous experience working within living-learning community-based housing.
  • Previous work experience in residential life, fraternity/sorority life, student activities, or related student affairs areas.

    Demonstrated ability to perform administrative tasks. Demonstrated ability to develop and carry out successful programming for a residential community, or equivalent. Customer/Client Focus with an emphasis on problem-solving and resolution. Personal effectiveness and credibility as demonstrated by interpersonal and professional confidence.

    Responsibilities

    25% - Residential Life Administrative Coordination
    Professional Staff Team Member: Attend weekly meetings; promote and execute the departmental mission, vision, and goals. Prepare and attend professional development programs; participate in planning efforts; assist with developing yearly goals and objectives for the respective area; complete administrative paperwork; cultivate mutually supportive relationships on and off-campus; serve as a positive role model and mentor to members of the team.
    Administrative Systems Coordination: leads the opening and closing processes for residence halls/apartments throughout the year; implements check-ins and check-outs; ensures correct room/apartment placements and provides the follow-through of all necessary documentation of room changes; assists with fire and emergency response drills; follows up on all maintenance concerns and safety issues; assists with the damage billing process; and, follows up on all risk management concerns and documentation;
    Leadership-Participate in: interviews, selection, training, leading, and evaluating resident assistants; plans and develops weekly team training and development meetings; takes a developmental approach to leadership and evaluation; accurately follows up and documents all staffing concerns

    25% - Community Development and Student Success
    Positive Community Building: acts as a positive role model for students; fosters the development of a safe and healthy community; facilitates awareness among residents about community standards and the need for responsible citizenship; develops a community which promotes inclusive, mature, respectful behavior; facilitates student activities and educational programs which encourage student development and respects diverse student groups; advises student government, motivates and trains student leaders; plans and implements co-curricular program for residents' growth and development;
    Community programmatic implementation: responsible for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of an inclusive community development plan, in collaboration with other University Housing staff; integrates the academic experience within the learning community and promotes faculty involvement;
    Core Area Coordination: core area assignments start at the beginning of each academic year; RLCs are responsible for assessment, planning, and implementation of area-specific programmatic needs, and accomplishing specific departmental objectives as designed for each core area;

    30% - Conduct/Emergency Response
    Community Standards: educates students concerning their rights and responsibilities as Residence Hall/Apartment and University community members; trains and leads Resident Assistants on appropriate and effective boundary setting techniques; serve as disciplinary meeting officer for low-level community standards violation; completes all necessary paperwork in a timely and thorough manner; handles confidential information in accordance with FERPA policies and procedures;
    Counselor/Resource Referral: counsel and refer students individually on academic, social, and personal concerns and adjustments; mediate and resolve student conflicts;
    Crisis/Emergency Response: responsible for serving as a member of a 24‐hour on‐call response team (including evenings, weekends, and holidays); responding to issues of student or facility crises; monitoring and reporting Clery Act violations; maintaining a reasonable approach to sometimes trying and critical situations; appropriately follow all on-call protocols; RLCs are required to demonstrate moderate physical effort when responding to an emergency, which includes quick response time to call and on-scene, walking up hills and stairs, and carrying duty supplies. These tasks may be handled during power outages or facility malfunctions.

    15% - Attend trainings, workshops and other learning opportunities related to Housing to recommend solutions, and resolve problems within area of assignment.

    5% - Other job-related duties and special projects as assigned
