The director of international programs manages the operations of the International Programs Office and plays a central role in campus efforts towards internationalization and fostering global learning. The director leads global partnership strategy and development, risk assessment and management, student and faculty mobility programs, inbound student and scholar services, and other global learning initiatives. Responsibilities include heading the office, including staff supervision and development, strategic planning and assessment, program design, student advising practices, inclusive programming, and budget oversight. The director of international programs represents the office at campus, State University of New York ( SUNY ), and national venues and cultivates existing and new collaborations ensuring that initiatives fit within the college mission and priorities.

The International Programs Office coordinates both study abroad and international student and scholar services. The office manages the operations of SUNY Cortland’s study abroad programs, exchange programs, dual diploma programs, and other academic programs and provides advising to students through the entire study abroad process. The office provides a range of services to international students and scholars including immigration advising, orientation, and mentorship and support throughout their stay. In addition, the office coordinates a number of intercultural programs and student leadership opportunities to maximize student experience and support campus engagement with global issues. Major Responsibilities
  • Supervise staff and support staff professional development.
  • Develop a strategic plan that identifies the office priorities, align those within the context of institutional priorities, and create an assessment plan for continuous improvement. Regularly assess programs/initiatives and implement changes based on assessments.
  • Coordinate functional work of the office to use resources, technology, communication, and planning to serve students and the campus.
  • Provide leadership in international education and student development by articulating student outcomes and facilitating student outreach and programs that offer the greatest opportunity for student learning, engagement, and personal development.
  • Coordinate with academic departments and offices to address curricular and academic policies relevant to processes and international programs.
  • Responsible for partnerships and agreements including ensuring all protocols all followed, monitoring for compliance, and evaluating on a regular basis. Collaborate on exploration, development, and assessment of innovative new models for collaboration and initiatives related to International Programs.
  • Ensure that all practices meet regulatory standards and provide leadership to the campus on issues of immigration, agreement development, and changes in SUNY, state, and federal regulations.
  • Represent the office on campus committees and at meetings as relevant.
  • Manage all budget operations, including state side accounts, international payments, and program budgets. Approve purchasing and budget transfers and ensure record keeping follows all relevant regulations and maintains excellent levels of accountability.
  • Manage workload of 3-5 study abroad, exchange programs, or other international programs and provide service to students as needed.
Job Requirements:
  • Effective interpersonal and communications skills to create successful partnerships with faculty, international partners, staff and students.
  • Organizational, management, and supervisory skills to effectively administer the office and its staff.
Functional and Supervisory Relationships
Staff supervision includes three professional staff, two administrative staff, and numerous student employees and interns. The director reports to the assistant vice provost for Academic Affairs. Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree
  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience working in the field international education, (e.g., coordinating study abroad, or international student services)
  • Experience leading and supervising teams of professionals that develop, implement, manage, and market a broad range of experiential programs
  • Experience managing areas of an international education office including strategic planning; contract negotiations/compliance; international partnership development; budget management; program and services development; student advising; and risk assessment, mitigation, and response.
  • Experience using technology such as databases and the web
  • International experience studying, living, or working abroad
  • Evidence of in-depth knowledge of the field of international education including scholarship, trends and best practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctorate in a related field
  • Experience with assessment for program development
  • Proficiency in a second language
