Position Summary

Under the Direction of the Vice Dean & Chief of Staff, the Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for oversight of the School of Social Work ’s strategic marketing, communications, and outreach plans. In addition to developing the plan to align with the school’s overall goals and objectives – with significant focus on initiatives related to social and racial justice – the position will advance the reputation and awareness of the school.

Specific responsibilities include:
  • Provide executive-level communications support to, and serve as the “voice” of, the Dean, providing a consistent tone and set of messages in all external relations activities (correspondence, presentations, prepared remarks etc.) and in the Dean’s internal communications. Effectively communicate while integrating a trauma-informed and human rights lens, also highlighting the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. Translating brand strategy by turning around copy quickly, on a regular basis.
  • Lead the direction of short-and long-term communication and marketing strategies, including managing a communications and marketing budget.
  • Content creation/writing across a range of channels – promote the school, academic programs, and various events and activities to internal and external constituencies via publications, presentations, email, marketing materials, website, videos, school magazine, social and other media.
  • Develop and manage new initiatives to increase the visibility and impact of the school (Dean, faculty, students and alumni) in the press, through partnership with the central University Communications Media Relations team.
  • Develop an annual calendar/plan to coordinate marketing and messaging.
  • Collaborate with SSW’s admissions, student services and other units within the school, as needed, to support and bolster their efforts.
  • Serve as an advisor to the Dean and key administrators on issues related to marketing and communications for the school.
  • Participate as a member of the Dean’s administrative team and in various committees appropriate to the position.
  • Develop and implement tools and metrics to determine the effectiveness of communication strategies and executed plans.
  • Coordinate the management of crisis communications for the school, through efforts to surface and avoid potential media crises and by working with appropriate personnel in University Communications to avoid reputational threats.
  • Supervision of individual serving in Associate Director of Communications role.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with 1 year of related experience or a bachelor’s degree with 3 years of experience.
  • Experience developing and implementing communications and marketing strategies
  • Strong organizational, project management and relationship management skills
  • Thorough understanding of digital communications

Preferred Qualifications
  • 8+ years of related experience
  • Video creation and graphic design knowledge and experience
  • Track record of achieving measurable results
  • Search engine optimization and Google Analytics skills to evaluate and improve website
