The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is seeking a Research Technologist. 75% or more of effort/time dedicated to a research project investigating the role of the tumor microenvironment on melanoma initiation, progression, and therapy resistance. 25% or less of effort/time dedicated to laboratory maintenance to support the general research activities in the laboratory.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Research Project Activities(75%)

  • Will require basic science, translational research knowledge and problem-solving skills, in addition to reading of the relevant literature.
  • The candidate will be trained by Dr. Ashani Weeraratna and more senior lab members to perform experiments required by the project.
  • These experiments will involve mouse work, genetic silencing approaches, immunofluorescence microscopy, and other cell and molecular biology techniques.
  • The candidate will meet regularly with Dr. Weeraratna to plan experiments and discuss results, and they will also be expected to present their data at group meetings.

Laboratory Support Activities (25%)

  • Preparing solutions and media following standard formulas and procedures, preparing drug stocks, ordering of supplies, and maintaining mice.
  • Laboratory maintenance also includes maintaining lab organization, arranging for repair and maintenance of laboratory equipment, and complying with biohazard safety standards.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Sciences or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Prior lab research experience at the graduate level and/or beyond.
  • Prior experience working with mice, microscopy and/or basic molecular biology desirable.

Physical Requirements:

  • Materials, machines and/or equipment used on the job include balances, pH meters, centrifuges, electrophoresis system, microscopes, UV and visible spectroscopy, and incubators for growing fungal and bacterial cultures.
