EnvironMentors Program Coordinator/Facilitator - Woodland Hills & Sto-Rox

Chatham University runs a chapter of the EnvironMentors program from the Global Council for Science and the Environment (GCSE). From GCSE: "EnvironMentors is a national college access program with a mission to mentor and motivate high school students from communities underrepresented in the sciences as they plan and conduct environmental research and acquire skills that will allow them to build careers and become more active stewards of their communities and the environment."

The Eden Hall Campus K-12 Program is seeking one part-time professional to work 10 hours per week, or two part-time professionals to work 5 hours per week each, to be the main Program Coordinator and Facilitator at two sites:

• Site 1: Woodland Hills School District/Braddock Youth Project
• Site 2: Sto-Rox School District/Resilient Minds Youth Development.

This is a part time, temporary, grant funded position lasting from late August/Early September 2022 through late May/early June 2023 (38 weeks total, including unpaid vacation weeks when school is on break).

Duties and Responsibilities :

• Collaborate with the Eden Hall K-12 Education Coordinator to recruit 10-15 high school students to participate at your site (for all sites except Sto-Rox/Resilient Young Minds Development).
• Recruit one university faculty, student or staff mentor, or community member mentor for each student participant.
• Coordinate logistics for 3-4 in person meetings per month (usually held weekly) over the course of the school year with your site's Teacher Liaison.
• Teach workshop content using curriculum provided by GCSE and Chatham University during weekly sessions at one (5 hours per week) or both (10 hours per week) of the below sites for the duration of the school year (September through late May/early June). Must be available at least one day per week during the following window(s), which include program set-up, clean-up and debrief time:
  • Site 1: Woodland Hills High School/Braddock Youth Project - must be available one day o f the week between Monday and Thursday from 3:00-6:00pm
  • Site 2: Sto-Rox BlackTeaBrownSuga Network - must be available for 2 hours on Wednesdays between 2 and 6pm
• Support high school students through conducting a community connected research project as individuals or in groups of 2+ based on science or social science topics.
• Co-plan an end of year showcase for students at all Chatham chapter program sites to share their work with peers, parents, mentors and project stakeholders.
• Respond to communications from the EnvironMentors national office and Chatham collaborators in a timely manner.
• Participate in post-season debriefs, evaluation activities, program building and networking sessions organized by GCSE and Chatham.
• Organize at least two in person field experiences over the program year for students and mentors.
• Keep and submit all required data, including pre/post tests, mentor contact hours, attendance, documents and three quarterly reports to GCSE.
• Act as liaison between various partners involved at each site, which for each site includes but is not limited to:
  • Site 1: Woodland Hills School District, Braddock Youth Project and Chatham University
  • Site 2: Resilient Minds Youth Development/Communities in Schools Pittsburgh-Allegheny County, BlackTeaBrownSuga Network Production Studios and Chatham University

Qualifications

• Comfort with conducting research projects, including familiarity with the scientific method and/or social science research methods
• Confidence speaking and coordinating with both high schoolers and community-based adult mentors
• Cultural competence and a high degree of personal understanding of your own race identity. This program is designed for students historically underrepresented in the sciences. Most, if not all, high school-aged participants and community-based mentors will be BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color).
• Child Clearances, including PA Criminal History Report, PA Child Abuse History Clearance and FBI Criminal History Report, which can be obtained upon hiring if needed.
• Ability to get to program sites and Chatham's Shadyside Campus (for program supply pick-up) by car or bus
• Curiosity and knowledge about environmental justice topics preferred
• Experience or residence in the school district you are applying to coordinate preferred
