Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities


The Massey Cancer Center (MCC) is seeking Community Engagement Coordinators (Associate Coordinators, Engagement Coordinators, and Sr. Engagement Coordinators) for rural and regional areas and Special Populations (Native Americans, Hispanic/Latinx, African Americans, people with disabilities). The engagement and relations coordinators are members of MCC’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) team. Incumbents in this role perform various logistical, operational, and educational outreach services for the identified unique population (as defined above) and help clients and communities overcome social determinants of health (SDOH) and health care barriers to cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment services. Engagement and Relation Coordinators work alongside the COE team to improve access to cancer screening, treatment, and clinical trial services. *Note : A total of four positions will be filled.

The general responsibilities of this role are as follows:
  • Conduct culturally appropriate cancer education activities to reduce cancer health disparities and build public awareness of cancer prevention and early detection strategies.
  • Perform cancer prevention and early detection services and assist in shaping and delivering messaging for cancer risk reduction (i.e., cancer prevention, screening, and early detection).
  • Connect clients to resources to meet the client's needs and eliminate social determinants of health barriers for timely access and promotion of cancer prevention and screening services.
  • Document all client encounters in appropriate systems and complete reporting requirements according to operational standards.
  • Consult and maintain regular communication with the COE navigation team utilizing the structured communication system to eliminate the client's barrier(s) to accessing cancer screening, treatment, clinical trials, and the supportive research/studies and program as appropriate.
  • Assist the client by connecting them with the COE navigation team about available services and resources to support the client's cancer continuum care journey.
  • Support the delivery of educational information about cancer clinical trials and, when appropriate.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with the identified community and individuals to support MCC’s mission of delivering cancer care through patient-centered prevention, early detection and treatment, and high-impact research.
  • Actively participate in community organizing (in-person, teleconferences, webinars, etc.) and represent MCC's office of COE in the community as determined and with the supervisor's approval.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Hiring Standards

  • High School and relevant experience or high school degree and combination of experience and training as a community engagement coordinator, community health worker, community organizer, community education specialist or a community navigator.
  • Practical interpersonal communication skills, including tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Flexibility to work on days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse individuals and stakeholder groups with differing needs.
Preferred Hiring Standards

  • Bachelor’s degree and relevant experience or bachelor’s degree and combination of experience and training as a relations coordinator, community advocacy agent, or community capacity builder.
