WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY IN ST. LOUIS, Department of Education – Assistant Professor. The Department of Education at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Education to begin in the fall semester of 2023. A Ph.D. in Education or a closely related field (e.g., policy studies, public health, anthropology, history, political science, economics, law, sociology, geography, philosophy, information technologies, among others) is required at the time of appointment. Duties will include conducting research, writing for publication, teaching assigned courses, advising students, participating in department governance, and providing university service.

Successful candidates will have well-defined, yet innovative theoretical and empirical interests in educational policy studies. Educational policy studies is the problem-centered analysis of authoritative decision making at the federal, state, and/or local levels by legally constituted bodies with particular attention to individual and intersectional geographical landscapes—urban, suburban, and rural—and looks at the education system holistically from a social systems perspective and examine the broader contexts in which policy unfolds. Individuals with a research focus on race, equity, social justice, and/or STEM-related issues are particularly encouraged to apply. In addition, ideal candidates are expected to have a strong methodological background in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research and demonstrate a commitment to open science.

Diversity and Inclusion are core values at Washington University, and strong candidates will demonstrate the ability to create inclusive classrooms and environments in which a diverse array of students can learn and thrive. Top candidates will advance our department’s multi-methodological and multi-disciplinary approach to educational policy studies and contribute to students learning how to analyze and synthesize policies which impact educational systems (preschool, K-12, and/or tertiary (collegiate) schooling), and across domestic and/or international contexts. Ideal candidates also engage students in the analysis of educational policy and address systemic inequities, counter deficit notions of those marginalized, and further their understandings of the social, political, and historical contexts of education.

Applicants should submit the following:

1) Cover Letter addressing the position and the mission of Education, including the Department’s Theme: "Equalizing Educational Opportunity: Equity, Inclusion, and Success in Classrooms, Schools, & Communities"

2) Curriculum Vitae, including current personal contact information (e-mail, phone, etc.)

3) Research Statement (1-2 pages, single spaced)

4) Teaching Statement (no more than 1 page, single spaced)

5) Diversity and Inclusion Statement (no more than 1 page, single spaced)

6) A List of Three to Five References (names, institutional information, and contact information only); letters may be requested later

7) An article-length scholarly publication or writing sample (no more than 10,000 words each) that demonstrates scholarly work in Education Policy Studies.

Applications should be submitted via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/111720.

Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. Applications received before this date will receive full consideration. However, applications received after the deadline may be reviewed at the discretion of the search committee. For inquiries about the position, please contact the search chair, Dr. Michelle A. Purdy, Associate Professor of Education (mpurdy@wustl.edu).

Note: Candidates with research foci in race, social justice, and equity are encouraged to consider submitting a separate application (in addition to applying to this search) to the joint open-rank position in the Departments of Education and African and African-American Studies through the University’s Cluster Hire in Race and Ethnicity.
