This position offers a superb opportunity for an early-career, mid-career or senior scholar to build a research portfolio dedicated to examining and addressing health equity and population health. The Hastings Center is a world-renowned bioethics research institute with an active research portfolio, outstanding collaborative relationships with researchers and institutions in the United States and around the world, and a strong commitment to public engagement, including through outreach to journalists, policymakers, opinion leaders, and other audiences.

The successful candidate will have freedom to identify and address major ethical, legal, and social issues on a wide variety of topics in health, health care, and science. The position is open to many specializations and methodologies, from public health, economics, philosophy and sociology to race, disability, and gender studies. Key is that applicants have demonstrated an interest in the analysis of ethical issues related to health equity and population health in the United States. Applications are encouraged from candidates interested in health care reform, health policy, justice and emerging biotechnologies, genomics and justice, community-based organizations or community-based research, cross-national comparisons, and the health disparities that arise at the intersection of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, ability, etc.

Candidates should be committed to collegial, interdisciplinary work. Like all Hastings Research Scholars, the successful candidate will develop original grant-funded research projects on timely issues.  Experience securing grant funding—or interest in developing that skill—is required, as is the desire to become a public voice on issues of societal concern.
