Job Summary

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) seeks a Technical Assistant II to join a team engaged in the operation and programming for the RISD Output Service Centers. The Output Service Centers are multidisciplinary, cross-departmental printing studios available to students and faculty to expand, support, and supplement the use of various printing technologies in the curriculum, class assignments, and projects of all divisions and departments.

The Technical Assistant II administers and maintains computer-related equipment and facilities in the RISD Output Centers. Technically supports and maintains a wide variety of equipment, peripherals, and supplies that enable digital activities within these areas that result in physical forms. Escalates client projects and/or assignments with complex needs or requiring expert advisory. Provides technical guidance and advice in support of output center services.

Essential Functions
  • Ensure effective and efficient operation of digital technology labs, and all digital equipment and peripherals located within the Output Centers. Purchase consumables and maintain materials/supplies to support daily operations and enable continuous use of equipment. Order supplies, maintain proper inventory levels. Track and chart supply usage and compile and report on the same. Suggest improvements to the facility and equipment. Implement improvements with approval.

  • With an understanding of the existing functionality, options and technical parameters of equipment, tools and applications, inform, guide and assist faculty, students, and others in the proper and safe usage of the Output Centers.

  • Ensure that the Output Center is adequately staffed with student workers. Train student workers in the proper operation, handling and care of machinery and equipment. Supervise and guide student monitors and/or other technical support staff to assure quality of work with emphasis on safety. Approve time cards for student workers.

  • Support the operation and oversight of the following machines and their related software: large format printers, laser printers, Vinyl cutter, Direct-to-garment printers, UV Printers, and laser cutters. Follow and implement the EPA hazardous materials standards.

Additional Functions:
  • Perform other related functions as requested by supervisors.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Experience
  • A fluent understanding of available technologies and the ability to identify and develop ways to integrate them into academic practices.

  • Ability to work with a diverse population of students, faculty and/or staff, with varying levels of digital skills/knowledge.

  • Proficiency with Mac OS and Windows.

  • At a minimum must be proficient in Adobe: Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign and Microsoft: Word, PowerPoint, Excel.

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

  • Ability to supervise and guide student workers.

  • Associate’s degree and a minimum of three years practical technical and/or printing experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
