Central Connecticut State University invites applications for a Director of Grants & Funded Research in Academic Affairs. The Director of Grants & Funded Research is responsible for assisting faculty and staff in the development, preparation, and submission of proposals for external funding; for assuring that project directors effectively manage funded grants and contracts; for establishing and maintaining effective working relationships between grant applicants/recipients and funders, CCSU administrative departments and external regulatory agencies.

Position Responsibilities:

Provides support and assistance to faculty in all aspects of proposal preparation, including conceptualization, formatting, writing/editing, budget preparation, and submission of proposal to sponsor. Advises grant applicants on University financial, administrative, and personnel policies to ensure that proposals comply with relevant policies and regulations.

Assists faculty with the identification of funding sources, the negotiation of terms and conditions on grants, contracts, and subcontracts with sponsoring agencies. May draft grant, contract, and subcontract agreements. Assists faculty to comply with University, State, and agency regulations and to solve technical and financial problems related to grant administration.

Maintains a thorough working knowledge of federal/state/private agencies' regulations and policies and stays abreast of new laws affecting sponsored programs activities; monitors and ensures University's compliance.

Develops policies and procedures designed to facilitate the efficient and legal implementation and administration of sponsored projects. Provides for the timely dissemination of Grants & Funded Research Programs policies and procedures to University community.

Manages the management information systems data base on faculty, their research interests and expertise, grant/contract activities, and status of grant/contract programs.

Maintains and fosters a close relationship with the faculty through participation on University committees, attendance at faculty-related events, and administrative involvement in special projects such as grant workshops to facilitate the ability of the Office of Grants & Funded Research to effectively support faculty grant activities.

Maintains effective working relationships with the Office of Post-Award Grants Administration and Vice President of Finance & Administration. Responds to auditors' inquiries and assists with federal and state reports if necessary.

May supervise support staff in the administration of the Office of Grants & Funded Research.

Performs other duties and responsibilities related to those enumerated above which do not alter the basic responsibility of the position.

Required Qualifications:

• Advanced education at the Master's level and five years progressively more responsible professional experience in Sponsored Programs development and administration in an academic environment; doctoral degree preferred with at least two years professional level experience in Grants & Funded Research administration.
• Detailed and current knowledge of federal agencies' regulations and procedures applicable to grants and contracts; excellent oral and written communication skills, proven ability to work effectively with faculty in a variety of disciplines across the University.
• A successful record of developing and preparing proposals and obtaining grants from federal, state, and private sectors essential. Demonstrated supervisory ability. These qualifications may be waived for individuals with appropriate alternate experience.

The Community: Located nine miles southwest of Hartford, New Britain is a city of approximately 72,000. Part of the Greater Hartford area of 1.2 million residents, New Britain is centrally located in the state and is within easy reach of much of Connecticut and several metropolitan areas. Nicknamed “the Hardware City” for its rich industrial heritage, it is home to Stanley Black & Decker. Important cultural institutions include the New Britain Museum of American Art and Walnut Hill Park, designed by Fredrick Law Olmstead. New Britain’s population is characterized by a high degree of racial and ethnic diversity. Currently, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates 70% of the population as White, 13% as Black or African American, 3% as Asian, and 0.2% as American Indian or Alaska Native. Currently 4.6% of New Britain’s population identify themselves in more than one racial category and 43% of New Britain’s population identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino. Fifty percent (50%) speak a language other than English in the home and 19% were born internationally. Significant portions of its population come from Puerto Rico and Poland or consider themselves to be from the African-American, Italian, or Irish ethnic backgrounds. In addition to all that greater Hartford provides, New Britain is 40 minutes from Springfield, Massachusetts two hours from Boston, and two hours from New York City. It is also part of the Hartford-Springfield “Knowledge Corridor” and, therefore, within easy driving distance of a host of private and public institutions of higher education and many cultural opportunities.

The Director of Grants & Funded Research is compensated at the Administrator 6 salary level in accordance with the State University Organization of Administrative Faculty (SUOAF) Collective Bargaining Union Agreement.
