Concordia University Chicago (CUC) invites applications for the full-time, exempt position of Senior Director of Alumni Relations. This position reports directly to the Senior Vice President, University Advancement/Foundation President/CEO and is located in River Forest, IL.

The Senior Director of Alumni Relations provides strategy and leadership to develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive program designed to provide meaningful opportunities for volunteerism, service, personal and professional development, and events and programs for alumni to enhance loyalty, dedication, and support for Concordia University Chicago. This position develops programs to facilitate lifelong dialogue between the University and its constituents to increase alumni participation and giving. The individual selected for this position will develop and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships and programs with University units, such as Church Relations, Admissions, Career Services, Intercollegiate Athletics, Student Success, and academic colleges and departments. The Senior Director of Alumni Relations oversees the production and distribution of the alumni and friends newsletter, Cougar Connection, oversees all online content on social media platforms directed to alumni and friends of the University, and chairs the Homecoming committee.


Office of Alumni Relations:

  • Leads the Office of Alumni Relations program and staff as well as the Alumni Association Board of Directors aimed at building strong volunteer and donor support
  • Crafts a measurable and trackable membership benefit system to encourage philanthropy across the University and develop individuals at all levels of study into long-term investors
  • Interacts with other University offices and departments to engage current students and alumni in the Alumni Association, affinity groups and university events
  • Oversees strategic alumni communication through the alumni portion of University website, alumni toll free line and email box, direct mail and social media
  • Meets the needs of all constituencies during Homecoming/Reunion by chairing the committee that plans and executes homecoming activities for alumni, students, faculty, staff, and the community
  • Oversees the selection and distribution of several alumni association awards and awards that recognize outstanding alumni and friends of the University achievements
  • Holds primary responsibility for Maroon and Gold, the university's annual scholarship fundraising event


  • Hires, trains, coaches and evaluates select Advancement staff in consultation with the Sr. Vice President for University Advancement/Foundation President/CEO
  • In partnership with the Sr. Vice President and Associate VP of Development, develops annual, multi-year, and campaign strategies for the University
  • Directs partnerships with external organizations and the Office of Church Relations in order to strengthen the mission of and enrollment at the University
  • Manages a portfolio of 50+ households cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major and planned gifts yielding $250,000+ annually
  • Represents the university as a professional collaborator at public functions and events, including social and professional gatherings
  • Assists in strategic recruitment of volunteers to serve as leaders, committee members and solicitors in advancing the philanthropic effort


  • Carries out other responsibilities, including campaign activities, as assigned by the Sr. Vice President for University Advancement/Foundation President/CEO President, or the President of the University
  • Responsibilities above may necessitate work in evenings and on weekends as well as include travel.
  • Candidates must support and be committed to the mission and identity of Concordia University Chicago, a university of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS).

Skill Sets:

  • Enthusiastic supporter of Lutheran higher education and Concordia University Chicago
  • Demonstrated success in principles and practices of alumni relations and/or fundraising
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated personal solicitation experience
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of database research and maintenance
  • Must be able to travel and work evenings and weekends as warranted
  • Exhibits a service mentality toward all stakeholders
  • All communication with stakeholders is effective, professional, accurate, and timely
  • Improves work performance and that of others by being receptive to and appropriately sharing information
  • Strong preference given to alumni of Concordia University Chicago

Minimum Experience Required:

  • 5-7 years of progressive experience in alumni relations and/or fundraising required
  • Experience in educational advancement preferred

Education Requirements:

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred
