The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), part of the State University of New York and an internationally renowned college of art, design, business and technology with a strong emphasis on liberal arts, invites applications for a part time studio instructor in Interior Design.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Interior Design Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) seeks qualified instructors for part-time teaching Interior Design Studio courses. The Department offers AAS and BFA degrees. In each program, there are four consecutive Design Studio courses.

In the AAS Studios, students are initially introduced to the design fundamentals and concept development and learn to apply this knowledge to gradually more complex interior spaces critically. Fact-finding skills and design analysis methods lead to developing programs that emphasize space planning, human factors, and knowledge of codes, accessibility, and sustainable design. Topics covered include design concept and analysis, color, materiality, lighting, details, graphics, building codes, global context, sustainability, social issues, and barrier- free inclusive design.

The BFA Studios introduce students to the human-centered holistic strategies and principles of integrated, evidence-based design. Students collaborate with professionals from various fields and experiment with complex sustainable design decisions to balance global and local environments, economy, human health, safety, and wellbeing. They address current social and cultural phenomena and diverse and special needs populations and collaborate with the local community. In the last year of the Program, students prepare a capstone project that synthesizes their interior design knowledge.

The candidates will exhibit a continuous ability to learn, evolve, and adapt to the profession's developments in the theory and practice of interior design and successfully communicate such knowledge to students.

  • Experience and ability to guide students in implementing a successful design solution that responds to the program document and addresses all aspects of the design process.
  • Experience and ability to assist students in identifying and exploring complex problems and generating a creative solution that supports human behavior within the interior environments, enhances health, safety, welfare, and complies with laws, codes, standards, and guidelines.
